Stopped at a local restaurant for dinner after driving one evening and got a window seat where I could watch the car (328). I am looking down at my meal and getting ready to take a bit when someone plops down in the seat across from me. A 40ish y/o country guy. He proceeds to tell me "When you pulled in, I told mama, that's a Ferrari! Mama said yes it is!" At about that time, mama popped up over the wooden booth seperation and said "Yep. It's a Ferrari." She had a huge grin on her face. We had a little discussion about it and he said he was going out to take a better look. He got up and walked away with mama. About 10 seconds later, he stuck his head around the corner and yelled to me, "Were you a Magnum PI fan?" I said yes. He said "I thought so. I thought so." He left with a big smile on his face. I'm smilling just thinking about it. Made his day and mine.

Why do you think McLaren gets such a positive reaction?

Having had three Ferraris and three Alfa Romeos and at various times. The Ferraris got/get equally good and bad remarks, the Alfas were (no longer own one) generally good or "Has it broke down yet?" kind of thing.
The Alfa Spider got a few nice comments, one or two suggesting it might be a Ferrari!
Today I have a red Z3 and recently (mostly youngsters) it has had remarkably good comments. My thoughts are mainly down to them being unusual and perhaps red. Top down cars always seem to get a better comment I think.

I don't think children see the difference between wealthy and not, it matters little to them so I wonder what changes a person's views?

Funny enough I haven't really had any bad reactions to the Ferrari, but I hardly drive it and I don't take it places except Ferrari events.

    My Fiat 500 Abarth though...
One person scolded me for leaving the gas pump unattended. "That's a mighty nice car son but what you did was illegal." WTF?

Another person: "Is that a lobster or a scorpion?" When referring to the Abarth logo. I guess I could see that.

For so many of the above comments is the simple reason why I did not go with a convertible!
People at times are just imbecilic, feel way safer in the confines of my Maranello and less pretentious to the public's view
But hey that is just me

One thing about our cars, they are loud, even when they aren't really tearing up the street. This does lead to some misunderstandings.

Recently, I had just left my house and my car was not completely warmed up. For this reason I was keeping the revs low and crawling through my neighborhood. I had just left a stop sign when I see a guy walking across the street ahead of me as if he doesn't even see the car. I slow down and he marches up to my window. He angrily tells me to slow down. I calmly tell him I was doing 40 kph (25 mph) and that the car is just loud and that makes it seem like it's going fast. He gets more upset and continues not to listen. Finally, I had had enough and I tell him to piss off and he starts screaming.

It was time to move on so I gave it a little squeeze. As I watched him in my rear view mirror, I see that action caused him to have a fit with body contortions that would have made Joe Cocker proud. Then I see him throw something at the car. Nothing seemed to connect so I continued on my way.

Now I'm always checking out the bushes as I drive through the neighborhood to see if he's about to leap out.

Yeah, I got "Slow down, *******!" from one of florida's finest shirtless locals when I was only doing about 25. I had downshifted when approaching a stop sign, so he must have heard the throttle blip. But, you gotta feel for a guy fishing for his dinner in a roadside retention pond.

I don't thing I'll swap my standard 360 exhaust for this very reason of the public thinking you're going faster than what it sounds. its quiet enough to creep about around town but its loud on the open road when the valves open up unleashing that V8 sound! :)

I have the valved Challenge Stradale exhaust on my 360 and love it. It's an OEM Ferrari part, it is quiet tootling around the 'hood, and when I open it up, it sounds amazing.

Especially with the sunroof off. But you wouldn't know about that. :D

at my local Wawa fueling up the 458 on Monday. Early 20's guy comes up to check it out very excited, his girlfriend in tow. He comments how cool it looks, and then tells me how much action he would get if he had one. Girlfriend swats him upside the head and marches off to their car. I couldn't help but laugh....

Hehehe, I think sometimes when we are younger, us guys always assume we’ll get way more action with a ferrari..... then again, it’s absolutely true even when you get old! Hahahahaha. I’m a pretty shallow person, so long as a girl is hot, I don’t care about her reasons for sleeping with me, long as she does! I used to always carry the ferrari key with me as a prop, walk up, introduce myself, ask her if she’d like a drink and at the same time, plonk the ferrari key in her direct eyeline.... worked like a wad of $100s!, well, with the slutty girls I like to play with anyway!

I always have a ‘attitude correction bar’ in the car for those very types of person. Attempt violence on me, my family, or my car, and you find yourself at the wrong end of a bloody good hiding.... attitude adjusted forever

I had a guy tell his wife he'd trade her for my 348

My response was "who says I'd be willing to trade"

Yesterday a state cop was at a stoplight with his flashers on. He was out of his car and pushing the pedestrian button so that Ride the Rockies bicycle-ists could safely cross the highway. I was going way under the 25 mph speed limit in the 458 spider, He waved and yelled “nice car”. I waved back and nailed out on the highway...like l always do. Speed limit 55. Life is good. Life is better driving a Ferrari. And may the horse be with you.

    Ciao bella.

    >> My neighbors put this all over the neighborhood

The rule I have and one that has served me well for the last 45 years, is to drive under 30 in my neighborhood and be VERY conservative with the go pedal until out of earshot of my neighbors. We all have to coexist with our neighbors and their opinion counts. Piss them off and when your house burglar/fire alarm goes off, they might just say "Serves them right." Do you want your house burning down live on Facebook without anyone calling the authorities as your neighbors chant "Burn baby burn!"?

We should always be conscious of the fact that our neighbors have rights too and just because we have a car with an exciting exhaust note doesn't mean everyone else is going to love it.

You have a valid point. I always drive with valves closed when I’m in my
Neighborhood. The people who have been ruining it for us is some dumb kid with an extremely loud challenger who peels out at all hours of the day. I’m all fornsoeed bumps and safety but a witch hunt where nobody wins isn’t the right option. I just hate the passive aggressive warfare they do here with notes and signs.
