I don't know the process but it seems like nobody designs cars today. They are all engineered. Everything is about aerodynamics. The wind tunnel results have final cut. (In my head, maybe it doesn't work like this.) In the old days a designer would sketch out a car on paper and they would build it. Unless the wind tunnel results were atrocious they would go with it. Today everything is modeled to death on the computer before it is even built. That's not designing, that's engineering.
Well you definitely have the right to that opinion on something subjective like design. I will continue to disagree. None of those are great. Maybe good. Most are downright ugly to me.
My first thought I saw when i saw the SP90 is daaaaaaamn.....I want a 458 so bad!![emoji51] Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
The 458 will go down as an Iconic Ferrari 20+ year from now. It already is, but the passion will grow. Mark my words.
Irrelevant to me. I don't care for any of the new sports cars. If it ain't gotta stick, it ain't Rock 'N' Roll to me.
Ughh... the 720s makes me want to throw up. The headlights and front fascia are just terrible... i have one sitting in front of me right now... BLEHHHHH Same with the new vantage... The rest on your list are pretty great. Not that you care. LOL
design appreciation is always in the eye of the beholder - and thank god not everybody always likes exactly the same thing !
like i said earlier, its all in the eye of the beholder. but my post that you quoted was a response to jerry's statement that there were no great NEW designs.
You know, what I've found with the Mondial is this. 1) People that heard about it (and have polarized opinions) 2) 95% of the public (this is not hyperbole, most 8 billion of the folks on earth don't follow Ferrari models 30 years old, they know 'The Horse') - they go huh, what, black pony = right, what is that, fantastic, wow!? It's like a Hipster's dream. It's the Maranello incarnation of the bicycle mustache, nerd glasses, lumberjack motif, caveman beard, and the samurai man bun. I still get 10X positive attention in my Mondial versus my 456 or QP. It's a crazy cool car, and feel incredibly lucky to 'be in secret.' It has the living beating heart of every Ferrari and with none of the supposed 'elitist; "more then you can afford pal' stigma.' A rolling contradiction, a melding of emotion, a masterpiece.
I actually like the looks of the SF90 Stradale, but I do agree that it looks a little camaro-ish front and back. That said, I feel like the earlier, less complex cars were probably easier to put sexy curves on. With newer cars they have so much engineering and technology that has to be located in specific places that it somewhat limits the aesthetic possibilities. The 458 is my favorite for sure. Glad to know I’m not the only one who prefers it over the newer models. — Fly fast and take chances
There's a caveat to what I'm about to write which is that I'm about to compliment what are still concept cars, but... The recently revealed Aston Martin mid engined cars are proof that aero does not negate classically beautiful design. Those cars have wonderfully shaped bodies and heaps of aero. Even the Valkyrie which is the most extreme representation of that design has good angles. The Vanquish and the RB003 (I think that's the name) are simply beautiful designs in the modern era. So the busy design on the SF90 is by no means a necessity.
Well said. The only thing I would add is that while the general form may be good on the cars, it is the execution of the details (and the fact that there are too many busy details) that is the real problem. The 458 is a drop-dead gorgeous machine. The 488 and it's various off-shoots are an evolution of the same general shape of the 458, but they remind me of a high-school art student that doesn't know when to put the pencil down. Four tail-lights instead of two. Overly complicated rear bumper areas for the sake of the over-wrought design detail. Same with the SF 90. Look at how overly compicated the two-tone mirrors are. Keep the detail designs clean and simple so people notice the overall form. Not the other way around, IMHO.
I agree, I think the 458 is one of the sexiest Ferraris ever, they did GREAT with it. I want a F12 really bad, but I don't think they did GREAT with it. California and FF are examples of not even good Pininfarina designs. I think it is too early to tell. I think most exotics are looking like each other these days.
People love to criticize and talk about the good-ol-days. The old stuff is great and the modern stuff is amazing too. You guys think you can spend a day with an SF90 and walk away not impressed? I love the romantic idea of the Pininfarina days too, but during the LaFerrari development Pininfarina submitted 2 proposals. Check them out.. Ferrari chose the right model to go to production.
