I don't see the need for Vettel to retire.

Leclerc is revered as one of the best drivers in F1 already by many, and quite frankly, if that where true, Vettel is showing supreme raw speed (as he damn well should being a 4x wdc). Faster than I imagined, actually. Has Vettel made mistakes, of course he has. Not putting that up for debate. So has Leclerc.

But the ''has been'' argument that keeps being offered I don't see it anymore.

Do I think Vettel is the best driver in the field? No. Is Lewis? No. Unless Ferrari can get Alonso out of retirement or put Verstappen in their car, they'll not have the best driver. But they have 2 very good ones. Both are eager to impress (for good or bad, be the judge). Ferrari needs to stop worrying about their drivers they have (chance of getting better is small at best) and build a quick car. Either driver is good enough to fight Mercedes tooth and nail if the car they have is as quick as the Mercedes. We have the engine. We need the chassis.

If they build a car that's a bit slower they need to find a driver that can make up that difference. Either steal Verstappen or entice Alonso out of retirement. Something tells me the former is easier to accomplish.

It's your evaluation of Vettel that makes me laugh.

Can't you see that for the 3rd year running, Vettel is heading for another failure ?

He's been doing better than his teammate.

His failure this year? Or the teams?

His team mate came with only 1 year's experience in a B team, not 4 WDC titles !!!

Beatting Kimi wasn't a great achievement either.

Vettel smells failure, since he came to Ferrari, and is error prone Under pressure.

He hasn't stopped dropping off, spinning, crashing out, etc ... at critical moments in the championship.

This^^^^ and all documented clearly. Vettel compared to his contemporaries has done poorly at Ferrari and in pressure situations is an amateur performer. He is not at all the caliber he 'appeared' to be at RedBull. Ricci had zero issues defeating him in EQUAL machinery lol

He's been doing better than his team mate who Ferrari publicly said is not their #1 driver? A shock! Count the number of races Ferrari have screwed Leclerc in favor of Vettel, or just plain screwed him. 5/7 races, is it? 6/7 if you count the mechanical failure that cost him a win. Yes, that's 5 out of 7 races that Ferrari have actively screwed Leclerc out of points and positions.

Hell, Vettel cannot even bag a win while getting pole and leading the whole race. He always has to screw up in some manner. His dumb little pork chop maneuver in the last race cost him a win.

And Ricci was beaten by Verstappen.

I do agree that I think putting Ricciardo in the Ferrari will see a better, more consistent performance.

Kimi has been a world champion once, but has been freewheeling for many years.

A few good drives here and there, but not a convincing approach to racing for someone who had one of the best seats in F1, IMO.

I like the guy, but it's fair to say that in spite of his talent, he has been living on past reputation.

Yes, Ferrari has been stagnant with these two. There was just no fire in their belly, no real anger.

I know it's hard to find a real fighter these days, but Ferrari should have try something else, instead of maintaining the same duo year after year.

There can only be one. Max.

Otherwise they may as well gamble on some other kid like Giovinazzi or Ocon.
But that won’t happen so soon after Leclerc. Too risky to have so much youth.

Whomever they get has to be either supremely gifted, or have balls of steel.

I don’t know why, but when I close my eyes and use the force, I picture Magnussen in a red nomex suit.

SV won 4 WDC's with one formula. Drive fastest car, get pole position, maintain lead after turn 1, stay out of DRS, victory.

    Formula doesn't work anymore.

    WTF oh hell no! LOL

At least K Mag apologizes after throwing a temper tantrum unlike a certain 4 time WDC.

Then again, I'd be scared of Steiner too.;)

It’s the same formula.... Mercedes get pole and second, drive away, win race..... very rare anything other than that happens, and the red bull also didn’t win every race........ boring formula, stupid rules, stewards now instructed to destroy races, end of F1 nigh

    That is pretty much true.
we can argue about who are the best drivers ie Hamilton vs vettel et al, all we like, but the exciting part of the race is almost always in p8 - P14

The difference is SV cracks under pressure and is prone to mistakes i.e. last year Germany, this year Canada where I feel Hambone pressured SV into a mistake.

I know it's a different course and difficult to overtake but Hambone driving a suboptimal car was able to hold off Maxine in Monaco.

In my opinion SV's wheel-to-wheel racecraft is inferior.

Others that went to Ferrari and whether they won WDC::
    Schumacher 5 WDC
    Alonzo nada
    Prost nada
    Alesi nada
    Pironi ruined
    Villeneuve died
    Tambay nada
    Arnoux nada
    Schecter WDC
    Lauda 2 WDC

and I left a bunch out.

Most drivers who go to Ferrari don't do "all that well" (of course depending on your definition of "all that well").
