So Lewis was going for an overtake around the outside, off track...

Looks to me Vettel picked a line here and lewis then forced himself there? A driver ahead can make 1 move, all the way to the outside line of the track if he deems necessary, to defend, so long the driver behind is not alongside. Looks to me Vettel's simply going back to the racing line as expected? Lewis choose to go off track.

You want to nitpick the rules, fine with me. But you (and your 4 friends, who are well known hardcore irrational Elton fanboys), are the only ones disagreeing with just about every respected racing driver out there.

    1) Vettel did not 'pick a line'...he was out of control, remember? That's central to the argument he shouldn't have been penalized.
    2) This is not an overtaking scenario, it is a track rejoin scenario. So, speed relative to your opponent counts. Consider a more extreme version of events...for instance pulling directly in front of someone while at reduced speed... and causing a big shunt. You would not be excused by claiming you only made 'one move.'

Lewis is on the normal racing line. Reverse this. Vettel is on the normal line and would be screaming end of the world. No Vettel mistake none of this is an issue at all.

Well, a certain Ricciardo was on the normal line a few years back and Lewis blocked him... The problem is not to admit that Seb did a mistake, the problem is how the FIA stewards dealt with it...big difference.

    Yep.

If we penalize drivers now who made a mistake, even with losing time, bin the sport.

And surely Lewis should get a penalty for running wide plenty of times over the weekend, if that's how it works now.

Monaco Lewis ran wide and consciously forced Ricciardo in the wall. Vettel left more room. Everyone at Canada runs with the outside tyres right on the white lines. So given those parameters, Vettel left enough room.

The problem is as you say, not whether Vettel made a mistake or not, but the penalty and inconsistency of penalties....and then being told ''we'' are wrong?! Either both are not a penalty or both are, not one is and isn't.

We've seen too many times over the last few years where Mercedes drivers get away with anything other drivers constantly get penalized for (not just Vettel/Verstappen). It's not right. Some may say we need to dump our tin hats but it's right in front of our eyes no? It's not just the one time it's happened....it's constant!

What if there even was a second steering action after he had already regained control? He rejoined correctly outside the racing line and just after that he went back to racing regularly, fending off Lewis.
Two separate instances once steering input has changed 2 times. Was he then supposed to stay away from the racing line for the rest of the gp?
And he definitely didn’t gain an advantage as the gap was smaller after he rejoined. As Brundle would say he rather failed to lose a place that way, but that’s never penalised as long as the gap is consistent

A mistake brings review. None of them like penalty. Years ago is not under review. Vettel put himself in this position. Ferrari might win the review.

Wrong.... the behaviour and the unpredictable (sort of ;) ) penalties are under review from the public.
And Ferrari will never win the review... What would be the consequence if the FIA would take away the penalty? How would they deal with Mercedes complaining that they finished the race on purpose behind Vettel knowing there is a penalty?
It is said elsewere: there is no appeal against the time-penalty, only against the rules.... and if they change the rules this would bring Ferrari absolutely nothing or do you think those new rules would be dated back???
And to simlify all this to "would have Seb not made the mistake there would be no case" is nonsense, you can also say if Seb would not have raced but just waved Lewis by of if he simply stayed in the hotel there would be no case either. Vettel did make a mistake like many others before and now is the question how the FIA is dealing with that

Nonsense is ignoring the cause of the review and penalty from its beginning. Vettel. He opens the door with problems he creates. He might still win. I said nothing wrong.

The FIA has a problem with consistency of their penalties. This problem existed way before this weekend. So the "cause" for the problems is not the mistake of Vettel, the mistake of Vettel was just the cause for the review that made the problem of the FIA even clearer as it gifted victory to somebody that did not cross the finish line first. You say that if Vettel did not make a mistake then all would be good and this is wrong... These penalties are annoying for the last three/four years now and the fact that only one team seems to get out clean all the time (despite enough incidents) leaves a very bad taste!

The taste of all this is bad. We have this system now. The drivers pushed for this. Now until a change is made, we must watch it and they must live with it. It is a problem waiting for refinement by Drivers, Teams and FIA. I do not think we will see this change quickly but we could be surprised.

"In reality it seems that, according to the new evidence, Seb would have returned to the ideal path, indeed remaining more to the left of the previous laps. So without hindering Hamilton as Verstappen had done with Räikkönen at Suzuka 2018."

As in brake testing people? Careful, Elton gets accused of that every other week, and it’s a great demonstration of the stewards turning a blind eye there too

Ferrari are to prove that Elton was not even out of the track limits in the corner, and that he was actually less close to the right wall than he had been consistently on previous laps where he left the track on purpose. Vettel returned to the racing line, that’s all, and in fact, where he ended up was further left than he was typically racing on previous laps

Elton and Mercedes have once again cheated with complicit stewards. Just a shame the FIA will never allow the evidence to be proven correct

Don’t think an Italian steward should carry all that responsibility when everybody knows they’ll be crucified by international media for any decision in favour of Ferrari.
