I'm in NYC but I could point you to a few mechanics who are reputable and service the tri-state area who would probably be happy to do a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) on one or both cars. You would have to pay for the PPI of course, and probably transporting to and fro, but it would be a much better use of your time and money than paying one of us to take a look (none of us local guys being full-time mechanics working out of fully set up shops with lifts, to my knowledge). This forum is better suited to help you with quirks that pop up AFTER you get the car back to good running condition...the little "old Italian car" stuff.

You are getting a bit of suspicion from some of our folks here because you're new (some weirdo's on the internet like to come here and waste regular users time. God know why.) and because the notion of only seeing vague photos of the cars makes many rightfully nervous, and maybe some are more naturally suspicious. Don't take it personally. But if you know the family I'm sure the cars are real. However, if they've been off the road and unserviced for a long time, even before you arrange a PPI you should resolve yourself to the likely reality that these are going to be "project cars". That means that unless you're a mechanic who will do all your own work, you will likely spend as much or more bringing the cars back up to safe, reliable, usable condition as you do to buy them. In more direct terms, if you pay $10k for the car expect to pay another $10k-25k on top of that to have it made right again after sitting for so long. Worse case scenario (assuming PPI finds nothing catastrophic) you come out spending around market rate. Best case scenario you get away with spending about $20k total (which would be a great deal). And the upside of restoring your own car vs buying one at market rate that is already running in good shape is that you know exactly what has been fixed and when, so if things come up you either know what potential causes to discount, or they may be under a warranty from the shop that does your work.

My 2 cents. Let us know if you want PPI recommendations and best of luck on Sunday!

Send us more pics. As long as the body is good no rust. Miles are low and car is complete. 10k is cheap!

Whereabouts are the cars I'm in southern Vt if they are not too far over the border in new york I could take a look at them.

Hard to go wrong at those price points. These cars are ideal for the experienced DIY owner who can sort most of them themselves and build some equity. Dropping the cars off at a shop with a blank check could be dicey but also could work out very well. Buy them both, if you don't like the shops quote or big problems are discovered flip them for $15k each and keep looking. If they are both complete $10k is a steal and many who have read this thread are drooling with jealousy. Good luck and keep things updated. I'd love to find a black/tan 3.2 project car

Mike, if this is true. Buy it and don't look back. No matter which condition... the parts already bring up at least 20K. Buy both!

I really wonder why no one has had interest in the two Mondial 3.2 cabs. It is very strange.. be aware.. do a carfax at least based on the VINs. If you can post the VINs here that would be great. The are located in the engine bay, passenger side on top of the shock ends next to the airfilter box..

Goodluck and get Lucky if it is true :) you have our full support!

Good luck, sounds very intriguing. One question to ask the family although they may not know is if the cars were running immediately before they were placed in storage. It would give you a sense if the cars just need to be brought back to life or is waiting on a major repair on top of it.
You already mentioned you’d change all the fluids, don’t forget about the fuel as well, that’s usually the first thing to go bad.

    reporting back!
Looked at both cars, By the time we got there I only had 15 min or so per car, for they were located in different locations. The sad news both
titles were clear but labeled salvage!. The red one 1988 3.2 cabrio (43829 miles) had some aftermarket parts and the interior was moldy, engine bay had some corrosion and rust (pictured).
The black 1988 3.2 cabrio has only 10231miles and looked completely original. The interior was very nice minus a small hole in the rear seat from a sharp object. I was told it was parked there in 2016 and they showed me a video of the car driving on the road that
were running more currently than I thought.
My gut is to just buy the black one, for I could not find any evidence of body work for all the seams lined up perfectly.
I think I can get it for around 8 to 10K, get it running after timing belts and all fresh fluids (I own a full shop with lift and tons of special tools) and just enjoy driving it. This is not a flip or a later sale, I intend to keep this and give it to my kids along with my Toyota FJ60.
    Am I nuts?

Wow! Those do look REALLY rough. Worst case scenario, you could probably clean them up and sell them to Beverly Hills Car Club and recoup your investment if you're able to purchase them for the amount that you stated. The parts are worth the asking price. It may even be worth offering $5K or $6K for the red car.

In the long run, you would probably be better off buying this one that's currently for sale not too far from you - https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/1987-mondial-32-000.602404/

    By the way, that's a cool 60. I have a 100 series as a daily driver.

I'd be tempted to offer 15k for both. Always nice to have a parts car if you have the room to store it. Black ones are pretty when they are done!

Was the red car any where near the Sandy flood zones? Looks like a submersible to me.

Looking at the engine bay, maybe the black one as well?

I was told black was a theft and the red one yes water!
My appeal to the black one was it appeared all original and well I just love the paint.

Now I understand why no one looked at them. I would go for both for 15k as well and part out the red one (I think). Looking at the black one I would get it, put in 10K and you have almost a new Mondial, but don't be mislead on the video. It can be a vid prior to some event of the car.

When you buy it look for evidence of a submerge and take at least the cam covers off. If any rust, assuming it was a submerge. Do an engine rebuild and I guess a rebuild the engine apart and put it back together, no need for new parts I guess, but only to clean out. If you can do this yourself you have a very nice ride.

Looks like it indeed, but still very interesting for parts  even for 8 or 10K.

    Grab the black one!

If you can swing it take the red one too, if you can fix it your self, and sell it to use the profit to pay for the black one.

Sorry to see such great cars in this condition. So both are recorded as salvage titled?
As others said the salvage title will lower the resale value after they are fixed up. But if one or both will stay with you, the frame is straight and you don’t mind having a salvage title then I would get one or both. As stated, if you have the space and know how then you can use and sell parts from the red car and will make some money too. As you know some parts are NLA on the Mondial.
Let us know what happens. And I would buy parts from the red one if you were to part it out.
    Good luck.

Not normal. Except when the flunky gets a hold of the power washer/blaster... then the paint starts coming off... and then they're told "too late now, just blast off the rest!"

They look perfectly fixable to me....if you have the space, know how and time to fix them yourself. Worse case is sit on them for 10 years and they might go for Dino money...
But seriously I think they are quite a find, it's just is it the right time for a project for you or do you want a car you can go and drive..
I'd buy now and worry about it later...

Based on my own expenditure and the exceptional level of expertise needed to shake the wrinkles and faults out of the various systems I suggest a "spare" $30K must be readily available. (Fuse box and wiring for example, plus infinity).

Parting out might be ok, but consider time needed.

    I suggest a "no."

Spend $30K on a really nice Mondial after thorough pre-purchase inspection by a top Mondial specialist - and sleep better for having done so.

Opinion. "Opinions are like axles - everybody has one!"

Well I ended up buying the black convertible for 8k.
I know I could go out and buy it one that's running but since I own a shop with a lift , there's something about that car that just spoke to me.
After meeting the owner's family, it has a rich history. I feel like I got it for a good price I'm going to do a full engine out once over during the winter.
I'm just making it drivable and will have some fun tinkering in the process.
I've been building six and seven hundred horsepower motors by hand and installing them in vintage Volvos for about 10 years so anything is possible! I'm going to start a thread once I get the car home and report my progress throughout. Looking forward to getting to know people on the thread and finding all the unique attributes of this cool car.
