F1 becomes less of a sport with each passing year. +1 Absolutely. I defer to Stirling Moss on this one.
Senna paid the ultimate price. Since then the cars provide zero jeopardy, unless a truck is exposed to cars while still circulating.
Many sports have deteriorated over the years. Even the fight game, which I was involved in, is now a shadow of it's former self. True cultural icons such as Ali have been substituted by overweight and plodding "champions". Very few now have finesse and it's all about short term capitalistic gain.
I still chuckle when people say Anthony Joshua would be a match for prime Tyson. AJ is a nice guy but *******. Are they serious.
LH in my opinion would eat MV alive when it comes to mind games. He certainly has knack in getting under other drivers skins. So for that reason I would like to see him go there and get trashed on and off the race track Tony
I genuinely think that Lewis mindgames only work so long as he is superior on track. Trying to stay as unbiased as possible here, but I think Max would absolutely destroy Hamilton on track, so the only mindgames he'll be playing is against himself in the insane asylum.
I don't think that the mind games would work on Verstappen the same way they worked on Nico, because I think Max is much more self-assure than Nico ever was... I doubt any of these two would "destroy" the other, it would be a tough race till the finish as long as nobody gets the team behind himself. The problem for Max would be that Lewis already has Toto behind him and I am not sure whether Toto would be able to put his bias towards Lewis aside that comes from 5 years of successful work together. My reasoning is LH is a multiple WDC and MV has only won a handful of races, he already has a massive headstart on him. You could be right but the team (merc) would have to favour one or the other. No team in GP history has ever been able to service two top drivers in any one season. McLaren came close in the Senna / Prost years, so did Williams with Mansell / Patrese. Mind games got the better of them, its all part of the distraction! Tony
just read this after my post, seems like we are on the same page but I think MV is a lot weaker than he lets on, he hides it well but his body language says something different to me. Best Tony
Even if Verstappen would be at time a bit of a handful for Hamilton on close combat on the track, there are still plenty of occasions where the experience Lewis has accumulated over the years would pay off, if they were in the same team. Hamilton is not only fast, but a clever driver who can see the weakness in a rival, take advantage of it, and seize any opportunity. He has won some races against the odds, just by being a better strategist than his opponent, and completely returning the situation. I remember Alain Prost being the same, and winning some races from nowhere.
Yes, Lewis awareness of the race around him is legendary as seen on numerous comments on the team radio Seriously...Lewis the strategist like Prost...hahaha... you never stop to amaze...
In car radio broadcasts were very rare in those days (if at all) so I guess Prost may have [did have] had a tantrum of two during a race. I clearly remember him losing it in the garage at Spa many years ago when his car packed up and parked it at the top of the pits. I don't think any of them were immune to a tantrum of two especially with excess adrenalin pumping around. LH is very masterful but is prone to a hissy fit if he thinks things are not going according to plan. He has a lot of experience and knows how to win, something MV hasn't achieved or experienced as yet. Once subjected to the intense pressure and surviving it can anyone really judge if he is good enough. At the moment he is just a young buck vying for attention! Tony btw - once the fans flooded into the paddock there wasn't much left of Prost's Ferrari once the souvenir hunters had finished!!
You raise valid points. I think Verstappen's self confidence is rising every time he's in that car, and that's not to be underestimated. Works the otherway also...get beaten 5 times in a row (especially if you're expected to beat the other) and that takes a big dent in your confidence. Can hit either.
If you ever need to discover the true capability of Tyson I will share with you over an espresso martini next time you're in London
He [MV] is already getting the attention, look at us & media chatting about the rights and wrongs of his conduct. Its all brought about by his silly antics in a desperate attempt to raise his profile to be the next Senna or Villeneuve (gilles) I don't buy it......... he certainly has no "stage" charisma. Personally I think Lando Norris (LN) was better in terms of performance and a much classier act than MV. Put LN in the Merc instead. Tony
You can call me old fashion if you want, but I will always prefer a clean driver to an aggressive one. In certain circumstances ( I am not saying he does it all the time), Max Verstappen is like a bull in a china shop. It may be very spectacular, and apparently he gets some following from it, but for me, it's not necessary. Others drivers obtain results on the track without resorting to the moves he gets up to. I don't know if Lando Norris is at the same level, but at least he doesn't attract attention for the wrong reasons.
Damn hard to beat Lando for personality, that's for sure. The kids an absolute delight. Tweet— Twitter API (@user) date Tweet— Twitter API (@user) date Tweet— Twitter API (@user) date
Yep!! Nico - according to Toto had better mind games working on LH than the other way. Nico used that plus superb focus and minimal mistakes to take the fight to LH and win.
Yep. We all know how Lewis gets when things don't go exactly according to plan...hell even when he's leading and a decent lead....or such a large advantage in the championship he can afford to finish 2nd or 3rd....we know how upset he gets. Or his teammate beats him...he insists on answers how that was at all possible and berates his team publicly. I think he's more fragile than some think. And before another Lewis fanboy comes out from behind their bushes and accuses Vettel of being a cry baby, fragile mind and so on...this is not about Vettel Without trying to sound like a fanboy here, but I don't think we've seen Max show a weak fragile state....Frustrated yes, angry yes, and he's had his share of crashes earlier in his career...But I've not seen any kind of real mindgames from him or affected by any (not that I think Ricciardo played any).. Between himself and Ricciardo I think they did most their talking on the track really. I don't really want Max in a Mercedes but if he would, I'd really like to see him alongside Lewis and we'll see just what's what.
Unless Honda display power and reliability Max will leave to gain a title. Ferrari and Mercedes now have the power. Mercedes appear to be capable of excellent aero. The rumors and hints about Max are for a reason. His hunger is in conflict with patience for Honda. His future will be interesting for sure
Yep. Interesting times ahead. But I really do hope Honda-Red Bull get their act together and we'll have a real fight for the championship instead of 1 team running away with it again...
