Which is the modern V12 (not W12) you would have?

Well first off, this is a Ferrari forum so answers here may be quite bias (perhaps for good reason).

But it is interesting to note that as far as platforms are concerned (not iterations), there are not that many modern V12s. Now, from the poll we are missing the Ferrari F140 (the Enzo V12 which carries on today in the 812) and the completely redesigned Lamborghini Aventador V12...but I left these out as they are (imo) superior to the AM, BMW and Merc V12s. Other than that, we have the two 90s legends: the BMW M70 (S72 - McLaren F1) and the Mercedes M120 (M297 Pagani Zonda).

The V12 is arguably a dying breed and I thought it important to keep track of them. Please add your thoughts on the engines themselves!

 

The Aston/ Ford V12 is bullet proof. Nothing sounds like it.

They are a good engine, unfortunately they were based on the Ford contour/probe v6 engine.

I guess my 750iL is the only V12 I've ever driven. I used to joke that my 2004 Mazda MPV had half an Aston Martin V12 in it. It sounded really good at WOT.

 

To me, nothing sounds like the V12 in modern Ferrari's. The Lamborghini engine is close, but the Ferrari engine takes the cake. Nothing like legacy....

 

Having only owned the BMW M73, Ferrari F116 and Merc M275 (which is the only one on the list, so I have to vote for it), I can only say that I'm amazed that Ferrari could get almost the same power from 5.5L as Mercedes without turbocharging, and ten years prior.

The M275 is 5.5L (used in 600 models). The M275AMG is 6.0L, used in 65 AMG models.

 

F116 is the same block as the F133, isn't it?

And true about the M275 (AMG). M277/M279 is an updated version, all of which are 6.0.

 

I'm not sure if they are, that could well be the case.

Of the ones I've heard in person, the LaFerrari's F140 was the absolute best. Then again I might have missed some good ones....But the F133 was close

 

Dunno. I have a 12-cylinder Jaguar XJS that's not been the most cooperative, so V-12s aren't exactly friendly with me.

 

The Murcielago will always be known as one of the best sounding cars of modern times.....it also holds the provenance of the last Lamborghini having true Lamborghini DNA. The Aventador was wholly an Audi product.

 

F-50. That engine is something else..I could give or take the rest..but that engine would stay with me..

Sure the lambo sounds good but don't really hear that much about it. Don't get me wrong I hear the idiots reving the piss out of a cold motor at the cars and coffee all the time. Hey... Maybe that's why few talk about them
