But that has nothing to do with their talent, just the car they where given and the team unable to develop the car to keep up with Mercedes.

Had Lewis been in the Ferrari all those years and either Vettel or Alonso in that Mercedes, Lewis' WDC count would still be 1 and Vettel would be the most successful driver ever lived, and Alonso would be on his 7th this year.

    Yes, but that's all speculation.
I am talking about facts here!
I cannot help but see the name of the winner on the report sheet, and I don't have to imagine who else could have been in his place.
    When will that nonsense stop?

Oh, Ascari winning in 52; well, I am not sure if Cabianda or Villoressi couldn't have done it as well since the Ferrari was the best car that year.
Or, in 63, if you put anyone in a Lotus, he would have done as good as Jim Clark. Gurney would have, and probably McLaren as well.
You see what I am getting at? If you start questionning the results, and imagine permutations between drivers and cars, where does that lead to?

A forums discussion... otherwise you can also only look at Wikipedia. I still don't understand what you are doing here when it is all nonsense...

You hardly see the top team to go for average drivers. They try to get the best drivers they can afford.

How the hell did Damon hill ever make his debut then, let alone have a career.... perfect example of a car making the driver. Hill was ****ing awful

Damon Hill was originally a tester for Williams, but he had drives for Brabham before.
He was reputedly very good at developing and setting up cars, and that's why he was chosen.
He was promoted to the team when Ayrton Senna died, as there was no one available at short notice.
Damon Hill lacked some racecraft, but was very fast and usually qualified the car near the front.
From then on it was mostly a matter of making a good start, taking the lead and controlling the race, as you do in a Superior car.

I don't know how you came to the conclusion he was bloody awful: he won 22 GPs !!!

In a car that was the class of the field, he would have won more if it weren’t for that pesky young German !

Never could stand Damon, for me he was merely in the right place at the right time, rather than earning his spot, and i don’t think he deserved all that the Williams of the day had to offer, with a better driver in there (Senna) I think Michael would have had a tougher time overturning their advantage.... well never know of course

Yes and all but one of his victories were in a Williams. His win for Jordan was in a race with 8 finishers and his teammate Ralf Schumacher was told to hold position and finish 2nd. Damon Hill was mediocre at best.

What's the problem with winning in a Williams ? I don't understand. Mansell won with Williams, Prost won with Williams.

As for the Jordan win, Eddie Jordan issued team orders, not Damon Hill.

If you call a driver won won 22 GPs "mediocre", I think 2/3 of the grid deserves that epithet.

Do you realise, for instance, that only 6 of the present 20 drivers have ever won a GP, and out of that only 2 won more than Damon Hill ?

Red Bull has already Verstappen (among top 5), and Bottas is certainly among the top 5 now.

I tell you what, why don't you raise your list of the top 5 F1 drivers NOW?

I am talking about those on the grid at the next GP, so please don't bring back Alonso or else

I could do with a laugh maybe.

Minor correction...Damon was already Prost's teammate at Williams all throughout 1993 (performing quite credibly and winning 3 races) and Senna's at the start of '94. So, he was de facto team leader once Ayrton was killed. It was Coulthard that was drafted into the vacant 2nd seat. Agree about the rest.

I though we were discussing the merits of a driver.

You want to talk about your personal taste.

We obviously are not on the same wavelengths here.

I did discuss the merits of him as a driver (he didn’t have many), and my personal opinion on him..... explain your comment ‘that says it all’. What do you mean by that? You aren’t the oracle on f1 you think you are, so please, tell me why you think you can be so condecending? I’d love to know.
