Hamilton was asked if he’s concerned some people say his success is only down to the quality of his car.

I don’t really care, necessarily. And I don’t mean that in a negative way it’s just I don’t let that affect [me].
Everyone has a right to their own opinions. It doesn’t dictate to me whether I’m doing a good or bad job. I know whether I’m doing a good or bad job and I know how I’m performing and if I’ve got more potential in myself. I know the great work that I do within my team, I know when I’m not doing so well on a race weekend. I’m definitely enjoying driving.
It’s a difficult sport for people to have the correct answer to that because there’s only 20 of us that are driving these cars and no one in the public domain or even you guys can have the privilege of going and driving the car like we drive the car in the heat of the moment like we do. Which is a shame.
Even I go and play sometimes basketball and I feel like LeBron [James] for a second or Seth Curry. Sometimes I play tennis with my dad and I’m terrible – we’re not really good, the Hamiltons, at tennis – but sometimes I get it just over the net and I hit it right in the corner and it’s a great serve and I feel like [Roger] Federer for a second.
You can’t go and get into a Formula 1 car and do a lap like I can do a lap and say ‘yeah, that felt like Lewis did it’. So it’s a little bit harder to relate to and see the nuances and the differences and the edge that we’re on. But then there are people that admire it just because it is a whole spectacle and technology they do understand.

I think he's doing a great job, in easily the best car.

I thought it was interesting that he admits to occasionally hitting a ball as well as Federer, but no one being able to drive an f1 car like he does.

Actually I thought his comparison made sense.

Some people, who are regular tennis players for instance, could have that one shot that was spot on whereas when would anyone get an opportunity to feel what an F1 car is like?

It’s not a terrible comparison, but you could say that any enthusiast driver knows what it’s like to go around a corner perfectly (albeit not in an F1 car of course).

And I certainly know what it’s like to change gears perfectly... :p

Sorry, I disagree. You can't comprehend what someone at Lewis' level has to do, just because the onboard camera makes it look easy.

A competent enthusiast driver, with reasonable fitness and 500 or so laps of practice, could get to 95% of a professional driver's speed, but not on a consistent basis for more than 10 laps, let alone 60.

The last 5% is where the gift of natural speed is, the last 50 laps is where the capacity for sustained concentration is, and 99.9% of people don't have either, me included. The slowest driver on the F1 grid would lap the fastest "enthusiast" driver in the same car within 5 laps.

Yep, most people would just spin out as they took off and crash the thing

I think there is an example of a "normal" person crashing an F1 car in Singapore ?

I would say exactly the same thing with tennis. There's no way Lewis is going to hit a ball even ONCE like Federer can.

Correct. In response to what Ian said (which I'm sure is right), that then also makes Lewis' comparison equally wrong.

I can hit a decent serve every now and again, but it would never be within a bulls roar of what Federer can do.
I can also hit a drive consistently over 250m (and more often than not it's pretty straight), but that doesn't make me Tiger Woods.

There are similar comparisons for any sport. Nothing special about F1 drivers.

I agree. Interesting that there was no indication that either of them were enjoying themselves...
