I'm putting new belts on mjy 550. The Alt-A/C belt (201444, Dayco 6PK1000) went on fine, if a little tight, but it went on. The WP-PS belt (199834, Dayco 5PK1300) is far too long. I Attached some photos but it may not be easy to see what I'm talking about. My engine number is 54xxx so it should be the right belt. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Nothing came to my mind today.

You've got the belt on incorrectly. It should run from the left side of the water pump pulley (looking at the front of the engine) around the tensioner then around the crank pulley, to the PS, then back up to the water pump.

Always a good idea to take a photo of belts, wiring etc, before removing so you know how they fit originally.

Don't feel too bad, this just happened on my car. Good thing you didn't drive around!

    Cheers

Many thanks to all. It was late in the day; what can I say? Good thing you can't see my red face!
