The better car is the one that you prefer. This has been debated ad nauseam and the fact that a majority of voters picked the 458 is not proof that it is the "superior" car. It is rather microcosmic of something more significant. Voters are expressing that the trend to faster, more comfortable and refined super cars are not universally preferred. There is a crucial element to an exotic, namely soul, visceral thrills and emotive stimulation that is being sacrificed with the introduction of virtually every new model. This is a disturbing phenomenon for many , as the future gives cause for concern in purchasing the next generation of exotic. Germane to this conversation is the rate of 488 depreciation. Clearly, those who are recent purchasers of that model will undoubtedly incur a serious financial hit with the introduction of the F8 and eventually the F8 Speciale. The 458 is already at the low of its pricing and henceforth will see very little dimunition of value.
Regarding depreciation, an older 458 has indeed been already seriously hit and therefore will not depreciate as much as a 488. But there is another thread mentioning a 2015 CPO 458 for 25% less than MSRP, I'm not sure it will do better in the future (short to long term) than a 2015 488 picked up today as a CPO ( probably for a marginally higher price than the mentioned 458).
458 has a little more to drop but not much. It’s really hard to gauge the future value of any of these items, however.
I continue to be amazed by how well the the 458 spider is regarded despite its serious body shake. I would own one were it not for the unstable platform, for me that feature is antithetical to a serious performance car.
Stan, I get what you’re saying, but that isn’t a problem exclusive to the 458 Spider. If you remove the top off any car, performance will suffer. Performance and handling-wise the Italia is superior to the Spider, and thr GTB superior to the Spider and so forth. Spiders have decreased performance but some may argue, the increased magic of exposing you to the elements. I’m not a nut for one or the other: the best is to own both! You notice it shakes while slow driving or highway. If you drive it hard (specially with the roof open) you don’t even remember it. It’s quite the special car, I was driving behind a Pista and while it’s much faster and really good looking I don’t want to trade for mine. Add a Pista, sure but only if I don’t sell my spider. And when we were leaving the restaurant and the people were watching the caravan of cars my car was the one that really were surprised with the sound, almost F1 like. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I’ve never driven the 488 Spider, only the GTB, but from what I gather from friends who are fellow owners is that the 488 Spider has improved greatly in reducing cowl shake compared to the 458 Spider, to the point of being almost imperceptible(although more pronounced than McLarens). Not an owner but have driven one and its a much move evolved car, stiffer, better brakes, much faster and better tech.

I think it comes down to that some people are more sensitive to it than others. I know of an occasion at my local dealer that a customer returned a new car he ordered after driving it because of the shake. I love my 430 spider because it gives me the loud edgy Ferrari experience and my 675LTS because it feels like a rock solid hyper car for 488 money
If your into sound, add an exhaust. It will change your entire driving experience. Try some 100-200 cel cats first, then when you get used to the sound and want it louder go decats. Im decat'ed on my spider and its another level of experience. Sline, novitec, and IPE will get you F1 sound. And the downshifts are why more brutal.
This is accurate. Far more rigid than 458 spider. Anything above 50mph was really a joke in my 458 honestly. F Dealer and service concurs. Sounds amazing though.
Also, if I’m not mistaken, when stock, 458 doesn’t shoot flames, but will if one adds cel cats and high performance exhaust, it will. Kind regards, Nuno.
Agree, must put exhaust system on 430 or 458 to achieve perfect F1 pitch. I disagree, I have full IPE on my Speciale and it is F1 and more! Close eyes, volume up: Sent from my 16M
The 458 was so well conceived (not only, but also) in terms of sound that, regardless of variant, all 458 are, even as stock, spine tingling machines and all have the potential to be absolute monsters. I mean, check this Italia I’ve found: If it passed me by and I was with my eyes closed, I’d swear it was a formula car. Enjoy their sound. It won’t come back. Ever. Kind regards, Nuno.
