Well it’s been just over a month since I got my 2001 F1 360 Spider! I still open the garage door and just look at it every night before I go to bed, an absolute dream come true and was my poster car as a 13/14 year old.

Very glad I found this site as well. A big thanks to the people who have helped me along this journey. I was looking for one for almost 2 years and ended up with Giallo Modena with the dark Navy interior. In person it blew me away, before seeing it I wasn’t so sure.

I have never driven a car where people literally just stop whatever they are doing and look at it as you drive past. Kids wave, people give thumbs up, ask questions and of course have had a few people try and race me. I love learning all the quirks of this vehicle and reading the manual I had so many “lightbulb” moments. If you haven’t read yours, I highly recommend it!

I have done about 500km (300ish miles) and am glad I went the spider. In Adelaide you get some decent weather in winter and the spring will be next level. It’s quick without being ridiculous, feels very planted and just has that great aura about it. The seats are surprisingly comfortable and keep reminding me I need to get to the gym, the roof is (scary) poetry in motion and I am very impressed with the F1 transmission. You hear so many things about it that maybe I was expecting the worst but I’m not experiencing too much jerkiness. I do need a new exhaust as the OEM which is fitted right now is on the way out so that’s my next project. Loving the car and looking forward to taking the wife on a few drives, I have 3 boys under 5 so life is hectic and she hasn’t even been in it yet!

    Couple of questions -

Should the car be able to start in gear? Parked it up in 1st the other day and it wouldn’t crank this morning and had to muck around a bit getting it back into neutral then it roared into life.

Have noticed when stopped at the lights etc that mine doesn’t beep and go into neutral after a period of time. It did when I first got the car but now it just seems to stay in first. Not sure if this is correct?

Oh I set up an Instagram if anyone wants to follow my ownership journey @f1spiderman - Thanks!

First congrats on the euro spec 360, looks great! I have a giallo 1999 Euro spec.

For the starting, did you hear and let the F1 pump finish priming before turning the key all the way? Mine needs a good 8-10 seconds or so to build enough pressure before it will shift into neutral from an overnight cold start.
So if I turn the key all the way during this time nothing happens.

As for neutral at lights, with the original TCU I noticed the same thing as well, at lights sometimes neutral, sometimes not.

Now I have a Challenge stradale TCU and I really don't notice it going into neutral.
I can only assume this is partly because I usually I put it in neutral myself if I think I'll be at the light for a bit of time.
    (shrugs...)

Question...why'd you buy this instead of getting the new C8??? :D

Nice car and congrats on your 1 month anniversary!
To answer your questions, yes you can start the car in gear as long as your foot is on the brake. Not sure what was going on with the situation you described. Would the car turn over and just not fire or would it do nothing at all? Did you wait until the display said OK? If I try to start it before the F1 pump primes, it wont do anything...wont turn over or start until it primes. As far as your second question, there is a time delay before it drops to neutral. Here is a snip from the owners manual detailing the operation of the safety feature that drops the car to N

Yep I always let the F1 pump do it's thing. I am never really in a rush to get in and go, I sit for a bit, remind myself I am in a beautiful thing, smell the leather etc :D

Think I have worked out the Neutral at the lights thing, it won't shift into N if I have my foot on the brake.

As for the C8 haha - it isn't a Ferrari and I didn't have a Corvette on my posters as a kid. Add the fact that when it does land in Australia, it will be about $160k with all the fantastic taxes we have!

Thanks for your reply. The car wouldn't even turn over - and yep I always wait until it says OK. Hit both paddles got it back into N and then it turned over and started.

I wonder if I could be your brake light switch, the one near the pedal. If it's starting to go on the fritz, and it doesn't realize your brake is depressed while the car is off and in gear, I don't think you would be able to start it.

My general rule of thumb is, it's an old Italian car, so something would need to happen at least three times before i start to get worried.

Yeah it's an interesting one. Will check it out next time. So you don't have to pull both paddles and go back into N before ignition? I have read a few different opinions on older threads on the site.
