Anybody make their own? Tried my first batch last night.

Roughly 1 cup coarse ground coffee to 4 cups of water. I have seen differing ratios all over the internet.

Used a French press to get (most of) the grinds out. About 12 hours of brewing. I stirred every couple of hours. Taste was good. Smooth. Refreshing served cold, given temps in the mid 90s.

This is the "concentrate"after 12 hours of cold brewing. At least it's supposed to be concentrated. For size reference, that's an aqua vit glass, about half the volume of my demitasse cup, and I've had four of those today. I don't feel jittery, so I may need to drink a few more?!?

    Supposed to cut acidity, innit?

If I remember, on Thursday I'll do a Sun Brewed Coffee - Allegedly, it brings out some Caramel notes and so forth.

    That's what I read.
Sun brewed coffee. Is that akin to sun brewed ice tea?

My mom always told me that my Great Grandfather was an original with the iced coffee. I forgot how it was, but he made an extra brew in the morning and stick it in the ice box before he went out on the farm. He'd come in for lunch and take the now cold coffee out for the afternoon jobs.

    Yep!

The FP I'll use is metal & glass - no plastic, so it won't melt.

I swear by cold-brew coffee. I had some Dark Matter (an amazing coffee powerhouse in Chicago) cold brew and it literally changed my outlook on coffee. While I adore a quality cup of hot coffee, I'm an absolute cold-brew addict.

I "brew" my own at home with everything from Starbucks to Dark Matter to Aldi brand beans. It's all in the quality of the beans AND the quality of the grinder!

FWIW, this is what I brew with...

Awesome. Please share details on the grind, beans, coffee to water ratio, brew time, etc.

For my first experiment, I went with Ethiopian Yergacheffe (Kroger Private Selection), coarsest grind setting on my Braun grinder, 4 cups of water, 3/4 cups of ground coffee, overnight steeping, French press to filter. I drink my coffee straight, so no doctoring with sugar, milk, etc.

I drank about 2 demitasse cups of the cold brew concentrate the first day - in addition to my usual cup of Joe at work - and I had a caffeine withdrawal headache. So, I assumed it wasn't strong enough and went with 4 cups today from the original batch. So far, so good!

For my grind, I go SUPER coarse using this grinder

We found through trial and error that we didn't get as bodied a taste if the grind was anything other than super coarse. We steep it for at least 24 hours in the refrigerator and while our brewer doesn't yield a large amount, to us it's quality not quantity.

As for beans we've been digging the Aldi brand 100% organic beans and Dark Matter coffee beans.

^Very cool. Thanks. Am not convinced I am getting coarse enough with my Braun.
What is your ratio of water to coffee?

10-11 oz of coffee (coarse ground), 40-42 oz of water.

I'm MORE then positive there are fancier, crazier cold brewers out there but for the price-point and the fact it's figuratively idiot proof, I think it's the best bang for your buck.

    Omnomnom . . .

In winemaking, during first round of fermentation before first filtering, one must plunge & steep the top grapes, etc..

Do you plunge the ground coffee only once, at time of extraction? If more often, does it bring out more notes, whether positive or negative?

Since I am using a French press, I keep the lid off for the first few hours, stirring it about once an hour. When I went to bed, I put it in the fridge over night, I put the top (which is integrated with the plunger) on it & the plunger down, and the lid wrapped in Parafilm (science-y reference there! :D), which is not ideal, but if someone knocks that pot over, it'd be an epic mess, so... I got up once last night, and just lifted the plunger, and swirled the pot. Doing the same today. I am shooting for 24 hours of steeping time per the post above.

Yep, the exact same thing I have. Again, I can't stress enough that compared to pricier more extravagant brewers, this one's probably not a Ferrari :)

BUT, it's idiot proof (for me that's a good thing) and bulletproof. I couldn't recommend it more.

Thanks. I just sampled some of the sweet, sweet nectar made with your recipe.
Likely not the best idea after 2 espressi @ home, and a big cuppa joe @ work.
My caffeine tolerance ain't what it used to be!

I know I'm beating a dead horse but if you're feeling real adventurous, buy some Dark Matter coffee and cold brew it. Personally, I'll buy Dark Matter over anything else on the market.

I read this exactly a week after I got home from a trip to Chicago. I did enjoy some Intelligentsia while there, fantastic espresso. I'll have to put Dark Matter on the list for next time.

I bought a cold brew setup and didn't enjoy it as much as hot brew so I gave it away. The cold brew I prefer is the nitro tap kind. Mmmmmm.....

Nitro brew is AWESOME! It's ashame Starbucks has made it "commercialized" because so many fantastic coffee brewers have been doing it for years without any recognition.

I HIGHLY recommend Dark Matter, so flavorful, hot or cold.
