That is true - although my father once said of my (very rusty) VolksPorsche 914: "it has two things going for it: it is ugly AND slow" More seriously, in some ways I think the acceptance of bland automobile design is a function of the changing ways in which people view their cars. Transportation as an appliance has, for most, replaced the automobile as an aspiration and an avatar of freedom.
This gets to a point that Bob Lutz made in one of his books. First, the tooling for good/great design is not more costly. Good design/compelling attributes makes a car desirable to the point that the potential buyer is sold on that model and not cross shopping. To get a car that is not compelling to sell discounts are the solution which becomes a downward spiral between all the "not compelling" cars of who puts the most amount of money on the hood to make a deal.
true that, but I have heard many people say they really don't care what their car looks like, including architects ironically enough...
Wonder if it was an architect who applied their personal touches to this Jaguar F-Pace. Certainly can't blame the designers for this one! Image Unavailable, Please Login

That BMW grill is horrible, but the rest of the car is pretty nice if not Buick Camaro like. I also like the Mercedes above. Not to bad if not soft design.
