Imo any lingering hope for a resurgence in 355 values just vanished brothers - kaput. Price out the new Corvette. Base (a nice car by the way) is $60K. If you really, really like carbon fiber high $90s. Bet you can spec one that'll raise your pulse for $75K. I know, I know, they're currently $10 - $15K over sticker. That will pass. Bowling Green will stamp out a lot of 'em (after the strike anyway). Ah well, 355 is still a great car, just not a great investment.

The Audi R8 is a more modern very capable car than the 355 of course. Although an amazing car that does everything a better than the 355, the R8s are now 30-40% of the value of a 355 in the UK. They can be bought for 27k.
The point is that the 355s dont have anything to prove, they have become that fine wine as it gets older. It was one of maranellos finest back then and is still one of there finest still.
I am sure the new Corvette will be an amazing car, but come back and talk about values in a 10 years time compared to the classic f355.

And you think your 355 isn't much of an investment? That C8 will depreciate 25% when you drive it off the lot and 40% by the time its a year old.

You gotta buy what is truly special to you and what brings you to high emotions when you drive. Corvette doesn’t do either of those for me.

Hard enough to not get thrown in jail for excessive speed on today’s roads with what speeds you need to enjoy the more modern cars...

F355 is the most exciting balance of driving, looks, sounds, budget, and ownership experience / prestige of most anything out there - and it will always be that way. That’s why it is timeless.

Who is out there looking to buy a 355 as an investment?

There are several cars out there that can out perform the 355 for less money. NOT a Ferrari. End of conversation.

As a previous Corvette owner, and now a 355 owner I can tell you it really comes down to what you are after. The C8 will be on every corner, enjoyed by many. The 355 will continue to be that quintessential Ferrari that will bring a smile to its owner every single time the garage door is opened. That's what I'm after.

This. And not so much because of the brand difference IMO (eg the McDonalds vs. filet mignon comparison by ttforcefed above) but laregely because of the age difference. I would probably get a C8 if a manual were offered (and might talk myself into one even with the automatic) but it fits a very different mental niche than my 25 year old impractical, quirky and occasionally temperamental F355. The 355 isn't going anywhere either, a C8 would only work as an addition, not a replacement. But it's the car I would beat up at the track, park anywhere without worrying about door dings, no concerns about coworkers or strangers asking how much it cost or judging me for having a Ferrari, etc... The F355 would remain the top choice for a Sunday morning fun run to the coffee shop or evening out with my wife (assuming good parking at destination).

On a macro level, could wild popularity of this thing consume some of the $$$ that Americans might otherwise spend on other fun sports cars (like 25 year old Ferraris)? Sure, but I don't view it as much of a direct 1:1 competitor. People who are mentally reserving $50-100K to spend on an old classic European sports car are motivated by a bunch of emotions, including some nostalgia that a brand new C8 Corvette really doesn't fit well.

I had the opportunity to drive the last Corvette at Laguna Seca during its launch. It was so good, so planted, so fast, and so drama free that it was absolutely boring. The C8 looks way better than the C7, but my guess is that it'll be a similar great performance, absolutely boring car (like all modern porsches).

There will always be a market for drama and something special.

sorry, but you had to be prepared to be burnt posting this..

I don't care personal taste or whatever.. the new corvette is ugly as hell..
and to compare it to a 355 saying it will affect its value.. is completely ridiculous.

like said above, particularly the new vet is like McDonalds and 355 is filet mignon..

that sums it up right there exactly.

not a great investment..? whats the vet going to worth in 10years from now maybe a 1/3..?
I don't see 355 values going down to a 1/3 of current prices in 10years..

Sorry, as said above you are trying to compare apples with oranges.

There is no comparison between the two in my view. One is s mass produced daily driver, the other is a Ferrari.

C8,great car. Not a Ferrari. Will be the common mans Porsche at best. This is old news. I l briefly considered one. Looked at one. Then said not for me. What ever it is not, what it is is a Corvette. First year production is sold out. In the spring they will be as common as the leaf on the trees.

Have you missed all of CarNutDallas's posts? He talks up the upside regularly and has been waiting to follow the 993 bubble for the last few years.

In all seriousness, the analogy of hamburger vs steak is decent. Although, I don't know that anyone wants steak multiple times a week. Sometimes a burger is just what the doctor ordered. Sometimes, if you want something special, you grab a steak. I don't know that there are a whole lot of people that own both Corvettes and Ferraris (I'm betting that cross-section is relatively small as I'd thing the Vette is a stepping-stone car), but maybe a Corvette is a good regular /weekly option whereas you pull out the 355 when the timing is right.

I respectfully disagree with the original posters theory. Although the new Vette is amazing and a lot of bang for the buck, I still think there's plenty of upside for the 348 and 355. Think about it, everyday one is lost to fire, theft, coolision, catastrophic engine failure whatever the case. Everyday there's one less out there which makes yours and mine that much more valuable one day at a time. But like one of the other posters says if you're buying it for an investment you're buying it for the wrong reason I have gotten my money's worth out of my car 10 times over for what I paid for it!

It's not going to do anything to the values. As others have said there is quite a bit of difference to these cars and what they represent.

I am proud though, that the C8 is such a game changer that everyone everywhere is all "this car is going to destroy our values of our beloved X(car)!" It's that big of a deal car guys everywhere.

The 355 is capped on values, its not because the C8, there are reasons. Expecting a 993 type run up is wishful thinking I fear. I always thought folks out here bought them to drive and enjoy not polish with diapers and stare at them in the garage wishing they could drive them if not for the miles.

Enjoy them expect to sell for less than you paid and it makes it all so much easier.

355 is amazing, not an investment but I am more impressed by 355's when I see them than I am at 430's. A 355 definitely carries something with it that newer ones do not.

I think the C8 is the best Corvette since the 1960's, and certainly the only one that I've ever had more than a passing interest in. Looks like a great car in many ways.

But I'll never crave owning one, as I still do the 355.
