What? That sounds like an argument FOR daylight saving, not against it. Apart from the fact it makes no sense. If I start a shift at 5am, that is dictated by the clock. Nothing else. All this nature BS has nothing to do with it. One of the best things about summer is that you can come home from work, walk the dogs, have some friends come around for a BBQ and sit around in natural daylight enjoying a drink and a lovely evening outside. It finally gets properly dark at around 9pm, when you want to kick everyone out anyway. Perfect. What on Earth is the point in it getting light at 4am? Who wants that?! I'm more than happy to get up in the dark if it means I get another hour of usable light when I get home. Now that I think about it, the Left should be all for daylight saving. It would save on electricity use in the evening...
Who wants to eat dinner before the sun has set? BBQ is not my idea of dinner... Sunset vino at 6;30pm (real time) is perfect.
So I guess you wouldn't like to live in Italy, then? Sunrise / sunset times there are almost identical to Adelaide / Melbourne. I thought you loved that Mediterranean lifestyle.
No it works perfectly in Italy because the culture there is a night time one (unlike here where everything is day /outdoor focussed). I lived in Treviso (near Venice) in 2010 and loved that I could have dinner at 8pm and walk down the road to a concert that started at 9pm and then walk to a different part of town for a gelato at 11pm! Fantastic - but it doesn't work in Australia when everything is closed by 9pm, which is how it is in regional areas!
Sorry to hear that it may be like that in your part of Australia, but it isn't here. Even in our very un-upmarket outer suburb we can walk to any number of restaurants / cafes that are open until 11pm (and beyond) in summer. What you describe is perfectly possible - and indeed thousands of people do it every day - in southern Australia. Largely thanks to daylight saving.
Don't worry Karen. I know exactly what you mean. I have twice voted in Queensland Daylight Saving votes. On both occasions I voted No to daylight saving even though for me where I live, I could see some of the advantages it would have for me personally. The reason I have voted No both times, is because the people who voted No, so vehemently opposed its introduction that I put their position before my own. Going by the voting results, it's obvious that the majority of people felt the same way. Especially north of the Sunshine Coast. [emoji41] But I have to admit, doesn't it completely muck up your Business Calendar. [emoji846]
Have to agree totally with Steve and PP on this one....The extra time at the end of the day is quality time be it with friends ,family ,pets .or cars....A lot of people work indoors and the evening is the only time they get to enjoy the outdoors....I wish it was all year around as well...
I call BS! As if you would put anyone else before you! Unless it was a war zone. BTW, **** I wish we had daylight savings, as a born and bred Qld’er I remember when we trialed it, it was great. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
Yes you are correct, however a majority of people in Queensland voted No. Twice. People living south of the Sunshine Coast are much more likely to vote Yes. And you have to remember that Queensland is the only state in Australia that has more people living outside the capital city than in. The thing I don’t like about it is it mucks up my Business Calendar. Since I’m hardly ever home before dark it really doesn’t inconvenience me. Past Queensland governments have repeatedly been asked to draw a line across the state where daylight saving is in and out. Some may think that is a practical solution, however politicians do not want a divided state and it would make it even more annoying than what it currently is when it is in the southern states.
You're kidding, right? Then why do so many trees go into shock & lose their leaves? Why do some dogs bark at what, to the untrained ear, seems to be nothing? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J727A using FerrariChat.com mobile app
So the trees should wear wrist watches and dogs can hear Big Ben ?? You're reverting back to the old Wax we didn't know or understand mate
Actually the ‘business’ argument is rubbish - any business deals with different time zones - this just adds another. Another reason we don’t want it here - surf patrols in summer end at six p.m. and we have problems getting people out of the water then so you can imagine how well it would work trying to get people out of the water when the sun is still full on (and there’s less reason to, since shark suppertime isn’t until dusk) and no, we’re not going to extend patrol times to 7pm!
And more interestingly, why do neither of those last two questions have anything to do with the time shown on a clock???
Jeez you guys really live in a nanny state !....Why the hell would you burn daylight hours asleep in bed at the best time of the year....Australia is an outdoor country where the majority love spending time outside...Nothing worse than getting home in the dark from work....That’s why we have the Pomms coming back in droves. .....
Living right on the border, it means I can nip down to the shops at sparrow-fart and they'll be open. Of course, it also means that my mobile phone shows 7 o'clock in the bedroom, and 6 o'clock in the kitchen.
I'm with you mate, I live in Queensland and it pisses me off being woken at 4.30 am in summer when its light. Makes no sense to waste those hours!!
The two good things I can think of though one doesn't pertain any more. When I had the servo I used to specialise in European car parts and I started each day at 630am,I was able to start getting my quotes interstate at my 7am. Currently the only good thing I can put my finger on is the bank balance shows the eftpos transactions from the previous day/s 1 hour earlier..10.30am.
