It doesn't need to be. There are plenty of people out there that would prefer more driver oriented cars. There could also be a second line for GT cars. Having a special series every 4-5 years is becoming long in the tooth. Just do it right from the start.

It certainly doesn’t need to be this way but the super car makers’ read on their clientele is that they are giving them what they desire. They believe the buyer who craves a more compelling, hardcore ride, is in the minority and limited edition, more costly models are directed to this audience.

I am definitely in the minority then. I dream daily of a nasty, raw, loud, stiff, decontented, normally aspirated, stripped down version of all these modern cars. I would love nothing more than a pure race car that could be driven on the street if only for the theater of the mind.

You aren't alone. There is a reason why these cars get a premium.

Every Ferrari should be that premium...leave the posers for other brands. :)

The "special series" must be pistas (since there aren't other specials produced currently).

~2,500 pistas through Q3 2019 with ~950 produced last quarter (including spiders). Given the ramp in Q2 and Q3 and the timing of spider production we can speculate on mix...but its really a guess. Probably not surprising there will be more pistas than speciales (speciales outnumber scuds as scuds outnumber CS). If the current run-rate holds into 2020 there could be alot more.

Still hard to gauge because in q4 the F8 ramp up will begin. Pista production will ease up a bit.

2020 there will be very few Pista's, the transition will be to the F8 so the 2500 to 3000 number is about right from what others have predicted.

There are three low-mileage Pistas offered on eBay, two by authorized Ferrari dealers.

Of course. All at large premiums. My statement back in September was in response to someone who said allocations were easy to get and they had 2 dealers offer him allocations.

Doesn't seem that likely if they have already produced 2600 and the run-rate in the last quarter is ~950. F8s don't start to ramp until Q1 2020 (first US deliveries I hear about are Feb '20) so you will likely end up with ~3500 Pistas by eoy. If the spiders have a tail well into 2020 as some think (ie because F8 spider won't ramp until summer or later) you could be talking about 4500 cars.

Here are the numbers based on the presentations:
    Q3 2018 45
    Q4 2018 325
    Q1 2019 470
    Q2 2019 775
    Q3 2019 959
    Total to date: 2,573

lol. Yeah, right. The truth is the opposite very clearly.

(fwiw, the only ferraris I want to own are CS, scud and maybe a 458 variant, or older, simplier ones...but I recognize the reality of the brand and the vast majority of it’s buyers)

There were plenty of ‘soft’ cars made in Enzo’s day, plenty. There are proportionately more hardcore cars made now than there has ever been. Not sure what everyone is on about?! I would have thought it was obvious why F8s and 812 Superfasts exist - many people get tired of the rowdy cars quickly and they do far fewer miles in them in general. Customers with multiple cars often drive the softer cars, which are hardly soft anyway. I love driving Ferraris, I drive them even when I shouldn’t and something else might be more practical but I still do it. But I rarely do that with my Speciale with harnesses and all (it has 13,000 miles on it but 95% of that is from long roadtrips). If I could only have one sort, of course it would be the hardcore versions but since they offer normal sports cars (as they always have) I will still buy them and more importantly drive them regularly.

Technology is now allowing to make more versatile cars (with the very same cars able to operate in different modes) so that the actual difference between the so-called hardcore and regular versions is narrowed in terms of driving dynamics - which leaves the "hardcore" version sought after for other reasons (typically exclusivity, prestige).
This is also why a so-called hardcore spider version is possible, for a unibody aluminium car it should be an oxymoron.
