I have a friend looking for a 2nd series gearbox if someone knows of one available.
Good tip. I thought about calling them today. I think at one time Dennis McCann had nine engines and more than a few gearboxes. Maybe Tom still has them.
...so he has a 2nd series car which currently has a 1st series gearbox in it, is that 1st series gearbox working fine? L-series and M-series gearboxes are visually almost identical, so is it the stamping on the gearbox housing that he's concerned about ? There were some minor updates to the housings and a different cluster design but many parts are identical between L and M-series gearboxes. For example, the bottom covers and the final drive have the same part numbers. Externally they appear to be very similar from looking at the parts manuals for these models. One reliability change Ferrari made for the M-series was swapping the middle drop gear thrust washers for a pair of torrington bearings which is documented in a SAT sheet (the drop gears are otherwise the same). They might feel better getting the correct type of gearbox in the car but visually and functionally it would be the same I think.
I think this guy wants to make his car totally correct. I don't know much about the earlier gearboxes. I thought Dennis McCann told me years ago that the gears are not as wide as the E series box.
yep, I get it however it won’t have the right gearbox number. I can’t recall if the early cars had the type stamped on the housing, I know E-series did. Let me know if there’s an L-series box for sale I just checked and the 206, 246L and 246M have the same part numbers for the gears at Superformance but the shafts etc are redesigned. So they must have the same ratios. E-series has different part numbers for the gears and not sure on the ratios, would need to dig up the operator manuals.
I might have a 2nd series back home, not there now. Will let you know the numbers in 2 weeks, have to look for it... Regards, Alberto
Alberto, M-series gearboxes I looked at are stamped under the casting on the rear of the gearbox where the engine mount attaches and are in the approximate range 530-1000 and end in "M". e.g. "No 546M" L-series are stamped in the same place and in the approx. range 155-512 but with no suffix. e.g."N.440" or "No 507". Some gearboxes are also stamped above the number with the gearbox type and final drive ratio "607-R-17/62" on both L-series and M-series (I've seen on both) and some just have the final drive stamped (e.g. my L-series) and some have no other stampings at all. This seems very inconsistent and unsatisfying but the "M" suffix and number range should determine what series and what the internals are but I'm certain there are inconsistencies across the model overlap. Best, Andrew
Andrew, thank you very much for the information. I will check and see what there is. Regards, Alberto
Andrew, FYI, that methodology follows onto the E series with the number of the gearbox followed by "E" Tony
True, and the E-series gearbox is completely redesigned, looks different with wider ratios compared to earlier cars and the numbers start at 1 again. I just took a look in the compendium to check what I stated was accurate and there are a few more details - the 206/L/M series had the same gearbox with upgrades in the M-series (removed oil pump, shafts now solid with different internal design but same gears) and the gearbox numbering is sequential through these three series of cars. It doesn’t mention the torrington bearing change to the center drop gear for the M-series which I think is an important reliability upgrade for 206/L-series gearboxes.
Well, it appears I have found a "M" housing with the crown wheel. Contents, I have yet to identify, as it was disassembled. I purchased this box when 'no clue' was more abundant in my lack of Dino knowledge. A fellow sold me the box with assorted (mechanical) Dino parts. Number on it : No 641M . O Above it, "607-R-17/62" This is all concordant with Andrew's description. I also have my L series, complete transmission, no idea on number yet. Then, I have #3843 / E 108AL, and another one marked 875E If anyone is still interested, in the M, I would be more than happy to continue on the 'parts sorting' and try to find all the internals. Regards, Alberto
Can a 246 GB/TA be bolted onto a 206 alloy engine? I have a possible project coming up. I have the engine, need the GB/TA. So if anyone has one, drop me a line. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
