Ferrari boss, Mattia Binotto, has warned it will take a “few years” for them to replace Mercedes as the number one team in Formula 1.

The Scuderia has not been able to add any more silverware to their trophy cabinet since 2008 when clinching the Constructors’ Championship. The last Ferrari World Champion was Kimi Raikkonen in 2007.

Four out of the last five Formula 1 seasons have resulted in Ferrari finishing runner-up in the Constructors’ standings to Mercedes, who themselves are looking for an unprecedented seventh consecutive World Championship double in 2020.

But, while Ferrari has shown glimpses of knocking Mercedes off their perch, Binotto feels that arduous task is still years in the making despite recognising there is “a moral obligation” to try win every year at Ferrari.

“To open a winning cycle and to be in front of Mercedes in a stable way, it will still take a few years,” Binotto is quoted by Motorsport.com’s Italy edition.

“But I know that as Ferrari we always have a moral obligation to try every year.

“We therefore start with the goal of doing very well in 2020, we don’t start to finish second.

“However, if one has to say that he reaches that team maturity, that know-how, that sufficient and necessary running in all aspects to be dominant, it is fair to say that it is not done in two days.”

A couple of rumours have been swirling around Ferrari during the winter break.

The first being that Ferrari engineers have not being impressed with the initial numbers coming back from tests performed on their 2020 car.

The second rumour is Ferrari’s new simulator will not be ready for use until the spring and will be forced to continue using their current model, nicknamed “The Spider”, which has been in operation for over a decade.

It is a shame that they have to use simulators at all. Why not just take the car to a nearby track (like Fiorano) and run the snot out of it.

 

Because of the dumb rules!

 

The 2020 Ferrari will have a new, shorter and lighter carbon gearbox that will also involve a small reduction in wheelbase.
According to rumors, in fact, the transmission should be about 30mm shorter, which would result in a Ferrari 2020 with a slightly shorter wheelbase than the SF90.

Cheery news. If this news was from Mercedes, we'd be rolling our eyes knowing it was fake news attempting to manufacture some drama. Sadly, the news is from Ferrari.

 

At least , this time there is some improvement,
They don't have to wait four or five gps to realize something is wrong ( no kidding)
We can hope ..

 

For the first time in a long time, setting the bar really low for a change, I view this as good things ahead

 

Testing was a mirage last year. Ferrari, Ferrari, Ferrari. Then Australia. Then more losses. An element of consistency is missing at Ferrari still by the end of last season. I will not make much of the testing this year. Its a race where it counts. Not testing.

 

So 30mm could be the root cause for Ferrari losing another WDC.
Throw in some pitwall mis-management.

Ferrari will not be holding their 2020 car launch at their headquarters in Maranello, instead choosing a historical theatre in Reggio Emilia.

Romolo Valli Municipal Theatre has been chosen as this year’s venue to officially unveil what is being dubbed as ‘Project 671’ and it will be an evening event at 18:30 local time (17:30 GMT) on February, 11 which will be live streamed.

“We have chosen Reggio Emilia, because 223 years ago, this city was where the tricolour was born and later adopted as the flag of unified Italy,” Ferrari said in a statement.

“The Valli Theatre is therefore the perfect setting to reveal Scuderia Ferrari’s latest car.”

 

Is the new Ferrari called SF223 then?

 

Sounds like Binotto has tied Ferrari's hopes to Mercedes leaving F1. Is that what passes for engineering in Marinello these days?

Apparently they are selling tickets for the launch @ EUR 15000 per couple including meet and greet and race shop tour

 

Perhaps this years wind tunnel results are showing the opposite of what it actually is! Last year it started of as positive and was supposed to be superb so this year it is starting of bad and could end up being good.......... Italian logic perhaps!!!!!
