Looking to get into a 458 and have found a couple of cars that are fairly similarly specced and aged however the big difference is the mileage. What's the view on mileage with these cars - are they as sensitive as some of the more specialist/older Ferrari's ? Do they have some mileage thresholds where prices drop significantly ?

For context, the two cars in question are both 2012 models, one with 27k miles and the other with 11k miles. Price-wise the higher-mileage car is about 20k cheaper.

It is a car, not a collectible, and best enjoyed by racking up more miles.
Even if you had a 458 with delivery miles, I doubt it would command much of a premium simply because of the higher risk of maintenance issues from sitting around for almost a decade.
I suggest buying the best-maintained car that most appeals to you. If you can buy it local to you and establish a relationship with the dealer and service department, all the better but certainly not requisite.
Once you buy it, be sure to rack up the miles because they certainly enjoy being driven.
Good luck with the search and be sure to post up some pics when you finally make your decision

I'm certainly intending to use the car and will be adding some miles to it (prob only 3-4k per annum), so wasn't sure the 20k premium was worth it for the lower mileage car. I'm new to the world of Ferrari coming from a history of Porsches so thought I'd ask the daft questions before I splash the cash ;-)

I believe a ferrari has higher mileage effect than porsche. I own both.

My problem is not about the miles, is having the time to drive them all.

Experience rather than depreciation is more important to me, because If i drove it, it means its given me pleasure.

$20k depreciation is nothing compared to a $300k car you cant use.

So i sold it for $20k less than others, but i used it more, who got screwed!

Unless the millage is under 6k it doesn't make huge difference, maintenance then spec is what is important in my opinion. Given the choice I would pay the extra for the 11k car but try to get a discount as cars are not moving very well these days. I have had 3 of these and just bought a very low mileage example but it cost a lot more then a higher mileage one so probably not worth the difference, I picked this one up as a long term keeper and it will see very little use once my f8 finally shows up. Either way I'm sure u will love it

Have you seen the cars in person? I know thats a challenge but ive seen huge variation in the quality of a car regardless of miles. The spider i bought has 11k miles but a flawless interior with only a few nicks on the ppf. I saw cars with less miles with scratched up leather and other things that arent always apparent on crappy web photos. Sometimes youll come across a car with a seemingly excessive price, then see it person and realize "ohhhhh i get it now". Cars dont always wear at the same rate...

Well in five years at 4k miles each year on the 27,000 mile car totals 47,000 miles or
4k miles each year on 11,000 mile car totals 31,000 miles. If you plan on selling the car you will definitely get more money for lower priced car in five years, but you are getting now at a lower price. Probably all in all you will come out the same. Just my 2cents. Good luck with your choice. You will love the 458!

Whats the point in worrying about mileage at this point. What are the conditions of the cars ?

Down here there are braggers saying how cheap you can buy a 488 GTB . Yeh right if you want a car that's 2016 first year , heaps of scratch marks and looking used.

I'd buy whichever car you like more. I paid a nice premium for a low miles 458. But it wasn't for the miles, it was just the only one I could find that had all the options I was looking for. Now that I've quadrupled the number of miles on the clock in a year, I wish I'd have found a higher mile example, but no regrets. Life is too short to spend forever looking. 458's will always be cheaper next year. I doubt we'll ever see a year they appreciate more than the S&P.

I drive my ‘13 Spider just about daily here in FL, mostly top down. I decided early on that I wouldn’t care about miles, and I don’t.

Best decision I have taken, other than the purchase itself.

Just can’t seem to let it sit in the garage..........

If you plan to drive it I would not pay a premium for a low mileage car. I purchased a 2010 Italia with 14,000 miles and added 4,000 miles in 5 months.

the happiness factor far exceeds depreciation.

The cars are built to use and use hard .

either way will not amount to much when you sell it so many factors that you can not control will influence resale .

I own 2010 Italia , 2012 Spider, one gets used everyday I do not care if it is a drive to Walmart or 200 miles just to smile .

whatever you decide just drive it more the better for you and the car

A 458 will suffer the same fate like any mass produced midengine v8.

If you do drive it, it will depreciate. If you dont drive it, it will still depreciate. So just drive it and trade it when you are done.

I buy a lot of cars, and I am on Ferrari #8, and I have bought brand new (the first time you build one is exciting I guess for some people), and I have bought used. A 19 year old 360 with under 1200 miles, that sat for years (I would say run if you find one like that), and up until my 458 spider no used car had over 2k miles or more than one owner. Then I saw the white 2014 458 spider (and it had no carbon fiber I am so done with carbon fiber unless it is part of the body or chassis), 23K miles one local owner and sold and serviced by my dealer (Algar). I was amazed at how good the car looked and how well it was taken care of. Did I pay less than if the car had under 10k miles yes I did, do I care about the miles, no because this one is a keeper. I own a few cars that I consider keepers (my one of a kind 997S, AMG GTS, 458 spider), and when I find the right one a 4C spider that I am going to take a part and put a 6cyl engine in. It seems that a lot of people on here (myself included) don't buy these cars with the intention of keeping them long. Just remember this OP, if you are going to sell or trade the car in a couple of years there is no way anyone can tell you what the market will be like. One thing to consider is that if there are 100 458's for sale and your car has over 30K miles and most of the others have less than half that, well I think you can figure it out yourself. Good advise about service history, though unlike Porsche Ferrari dealers don't have to share information about service history. If it were me and I was buying my first one (and I am on Porsche #44 the Ferrari experience is different), I would buy from a Ferrari dealer (CPO if possible) and hopefully they can supply you with service information. People have asked me why don't you buy cars with multiple owners (over 3), and my answer is simple. When I see a car with 4 owners and 8K miles, I tend to think the car was treated with the rental car mentality, in other words it was not taken care of the way I would have. Your first Ferrari experience should be a good one and the best way to insure that (of course there is never going to be some issues, I is a machine after all) is buying a well taken care of car. Best of luck

My 2013 458 Spider has 34k miles. It is maintained perfectly. (Touch wood) it has been as reliable as a new Toyota.
I wouldn’t’t think twice about throwing a bag in the frunk and driving it on a circle of America 7000 mile trip.

Condition is more important than miles IMO. You can have a garage queen nightmare, or a car with many miles lovingly driven and taken care of.

If your goal is miles then cheaper is better.

Thank you, that's useful to know. As mentioned, I'm coming from a history of Porsches and they have some mileage sensitivity, but from initial viewings, the F-car market seems to be slightly more complex !! Was originally going to buy a 599 HGTE, however took a small test drive in a 458 and was instantly hooked.

Have seen the low mileage car in person and the higher one via a dealer HD video. Would travel to see the higher mileage one prior to deciding, however even the low mileage one had a couple of scuffs and stone chips on it.

That is true - less money in at the start, and less money out at the back end will probably even things up !
