engine whined and got overheated

had recent oil change and now timing belts coming back from state inspection when i pulled in garage there was a high pitch sound from engine and seemed overheated...1999 360 modena there is a known tranny leak(slow) but fluids stable no leaks on floor thoughts?im in process of trading it in

 

A manual did not come with car there is a screw top in center of engine and one close to the firewall both dip sticks are dry but I dont know which is which

 

Front one may be power steering and one between air filter housing may be oil sump level. Mine is 430 so not expert on these. May be dry sump engine so find out before you start pouring huge quantity of oil in sump, if dry sump then special instructions to check level. Beware.

 

The oil cap is closer to rear bumper and car needs to be warm (10 min or so drive) ..measure after drive still running

Describe "seemed overheated". Did your gauge say it was overheated?

I know this might seem like I'm harping.. but a Ferrari ISN'T like a Toyota. It's much more complex and nuanced. So many don't.. so please read the manual. You also might want to post which Ferrari you have.

No level on power steering tank ? Run pump dry ? Hence noise ?

 

That was also my first thought, although it wouldn't lead to overheating. Those crappy reservoirs like to split along the seam and leak a big mess...ask me how I know

 

Possible. Or loose accessory belt after the timing belt change when they didn't tighten it enough. OP didn't provide enough info for any meaningful diagnosis unfortunately...

 

OP does not know difference between power steering and oil reservoirs and his car "seemed overheated" and is "whining". Think any answers other than "take it back to you mechanic" are going to help. If he is an MD he must be an internist. I know, mean and snarky but maybe a Tesla is better suited for him.

 

I was not sure what to think, plus i dont know the 360 engine, is it dry sump like the 430 ?

 

thank you to the owners with class answers the internist comment shows zero class,,maybe a socialist(lol). anyways,there was moisture on inside window (water vapor) I'd have a manual(thanks for site) but finally selling the car and have put lots of money in ..Tesla sounds great! I called a non-sarcastic ferrari repair guy ive used,,, he graciously, had me check coolant container,,,bone dry.. so filling it and crossing fingers thank you(the guys who offered help) to the one with the internist comment,,, I'm a plastic surgeon whose HELPFUL to others it's no wonder ferrari owners fear getting their cars keyed with 'his' attitude. thanks again

 

That was an honest question to clarify your description, which made no sense. Way to be a jerk to the folks trying help you.

 

Some folks are total novices when it comes to cars. No need to be snarky.

You said overheating, what was the temperature gauge at?
For the whining noise, did you know the source?
As for the reservoirs, having them empty is a huge red flag, I would recommend you take it to a shop on a flatbed and have it thoroughly check out.

Do let us know what you find out.

As for the snarky comment, please excuse it, some folks are not as forgiving to those that are novices with cars.

 

I know. Apologies but some of the questions are so out there. I knew the tongue in cheek internist comment would get a rise out of at least one physician. Point was, while internists are thinkers and diagnosticians, they (the few I know) are baffled by anything mechanical so would be better suited to drive a Tesla. I quickly typed a post and only a few saw/sensed the wink, wink.
If "his" attitude was directed toward me regarding keying your Ferrari, the one that overheats, how would I have known that you were a Plastic Surgeon. WINK,WINK,WINK.
A very small minority of Ferrari owners are mechanically inclined it seems and those that are, are afraid to work on their mysterious and magical Ferrari's. I have no such fear and maintain all my cars and trucks(not my wifes newer car). I frequently get help on forums like this one when studying the Shop manual still has me scratching my head.
By the way, Plastic Surgeon, I am a retired Orthodontist. Sometimes snarky so another apology about that. I meant no harm. Should think before posting a snap response. But, you had all the hints right in front of you as to the problem. A simple Google search would have helped you and saved me from being fussed at for being snarky.

Thanks, you got it but as soon as I hit the button I knew only a very few would get the internist thing. Thinkers but not doers. Direct opposite of surgeons.
