Do you find that over the years of your work on Ferrari engines that you run across head bolts that loosen?, assuming by heat and contraction. Or by improper tightening from previous work? The reason I’m asking is that my limited experience of only checking a hand full of engines and those being fine. I was wondering what your percentage was of them needing some serious attention.
Also what product did you use to clean the engine?

Wow, checking back in after a few days and that is some fast progress! What is the cap on top of the engine block? Looks like a oil cap which doesn’t make sense as I would assume that this is a dry sump.

Interesting, I didn’t know that. When was the change to dry sump, the 512 BB?

Breakaway torque is higher than final torque due to friction so you could have a fastener thats sitting at 60 lb-ft that takes more than 70 to get it to move and your torque wrench clicks because the spec is 72. I find most (and in this case as well) that they can take about a quarter turn to reach the spec.

I used a degreaser and a pressure washer.

Here's another part that's had a running change. Up to 1976 - 77 used the thin belt tensioner casting then they fattened it up significantly. The 308's in 77 had the fatter housings. I wonder if they were breaking? Can you imagine losing a belt tensioner? No thanks.

You can't interchange them, the cast in bosses on the heads would be machined down and different mounting studs to maintain alignment.

Rebuilt the water pump, new bearings, seals etc. Cam covers go on next.

The spring washer on the water pump forward bearing was under it instead of on top of it which shifts the drive gear back into the engine so it affected the impeller to pump housing just close enough to make contact. I cleaned it up and put the spring washer on the correct side of the bearing and back together. Belts, seals and tensioners on.

on another point, that clamp looks right to me, obviously not questioning your expertise what were they using in the early 70s

My RC30 is in my office and it was my wifes suggestion! I nearly fell over and couldn't get it in there fast enough.

Cheney clamps are correct, they cost more than a standard clamp and they're temperamental to use.

Only a few small items like piston samples, Harley wheels and boxes of decals I reproduce. Used to have an Indycar engine where the bike is, had a 512M engine in there as well but that went in the black boxer project a couple of years ago.

Last year then I serviced it, replaced the tires and fixed a few minor things and put it on the road again and enjoyed it then put it in my office in the fall. It had been pickled and parked for 9 years prior to me getting it and took a few weeks to finally get it up and running.

The pretty red paint is coming off. Ill update the thread again monday.

Replacement exhaust manifolds are OEM used and had been ceramic coated previously, its easy to make them look correct which Ill do shortly and having the ceramic foundation is a good thing. A new 4 can muffler system as per original from classiche is underway which Ill have in a month or so.

A pair of 74 boxers in a body shop at the same time probably doesn't happen often.

Swapped out the 30mm chokes for 34's as per original. The carb top nuts were wrong and I had the right ones in stock so why not? Float heights were corrected while I was there. The tool I made says 12mm, spec is 12.5-13mm but if I set the float to 12 with my tool the gasket adds .5 - .7mm to the height so Ill be in the sweet spot.
