I've always said I wish I was born in 1960.

A kid through the 60's, a teen through the 70's and an adult in the 80's would have been such a great time to be alive.

Some (most) of these old timers here really have had the good life. And with advances in medicine they really are living the good life these days lol.

As much as I love my kids, I am starting to regret having to raise them in this **** world we live in today.

There is always light at the end of the line - you will make it on to the boat and then you can go racing again!

I nearly grew up in those times - I didn't get to Monaco until 1969 :(

Kim, if you like how things were then, at about 60 secs in on the video, just before the tunnel, there was a pissoir on the RHS built in to the wall with a cast iron screen "protecting" the view of the urinals. The "safety" measure taken to protect the drivers in '69 was to lean a hay bale against it!!!

Yes that most have been the most dangerous era of racing. Those guys are real hero’s. I don’t even see fire protection just a makeshift helmet and goggles. I’ve been watching old F1 replays and even early 80’s races had very little safety. Cars left on the side of the track, drivers attending their broken cars while racing continues. I think Senna’s death brought on a lot of strong safety measures. My main point was life in general though not just the racing. My parents were born in the mid 40’s. I think I would’ve liked to live in that era, being 20 in the mid 60’s would’ve been pretty ****ing cool.

    Pap,

most of the pessimism you feel is a product of the relentless negativity of the modern media, which is in it's death throes due to advancing technology.

When you look at actual measures of the human situation, life has never been longer, healthier or safer.

Your kids are inheriting a better world than we did and what they make of it is up to them, with the biggest influence being the values you and their extended family give them.

    I suspect they'll be OK :)

I like many of my mates don’t watch F1 these days, it’s all the same looking cars, everything’s so clinical and super safe, I remember even my mum would watch the Grand Prix because James Hunt was a handsome rogue and it was so colourful, always an event the whole street talked about, I guess these days your an F1 fan or you have no interest in the thing, I should try and watch it again, my son follows it he seems to enjoy it :)
