365 era batteries...

Does anyone here have solid intel or recollections on which brand(s) of batteries were (most commonly) supplied by the factory on front engine 365 GT, GTB, GTC, etc cars ?

 

owners manuals and parts manuals will give you your best anwsers.

Thank you Ed, it looks like 365 GTB/4 owners manual indicates 74 Amp Hour Fiamm 6B5, but was that just the case during initial pre-production timeline or was it the most during entire production ?
We all (should) know by now the factory manuals are/were riddled with incorrect or non-applicable data and therefor not necessarily best reference, at least for 365 GTB/4s.
As I said I'm hoping for first-hand eyewitness recollections or period photos from cars throughout the entire production timeline.

 

manuals are pretty accurate. check a 1973/74 manual for the change to another brand.
@turbo-joe. check the photos in those manuals.

 

timo i believe they switched to magneti marelli.

 

those batteries from this area are mostly not longer available

you only have to meassure the space for the battery in the car and then look for one matching

 

Gentlemen, this enquiry is not about finding a replacement or what factory literature suggests, but trying to establish what brand(s) actually were installed in and supplied with new cars.

 

I think fiamm and magneti marelli, but not sure

 

Fiamm has been a Ferrari supplier for a long time, so I think the manuals could be assumed accurate in this respect (for the Daytona, they mention the same Fiamm battery for '70 and '73 models). There are not that many Italian batteries manufacturers and some decades ago it was certainly convenient for Ferrari to rely on national production.

 

So far my still rather limited research has revealed following "suggestions".

GTC & -S: Fiamm and/or SAFA
GT: SAFA
GTB/4 & -S/4: Fiamm (& possibly M.M.)
GTC/4: No name 12V
GT4: M.M.

So obviously no clear consistency.

 

So who still makes quality reproduction batteries, size 27F. I bought the last 5 tar-top batteries by guy made before retiring and can't find a quality replacement.

 

While not originally part of my intent for this topic, a good question.
I've explored various ideas, but among many other small reproductions I'm not making money with, this is not something I wish to pursue at this time.
If you find some, please let me know.

grant, your picture highlights another item often seen incorrect on restorations but in you case i think you got it right, the windshield wiper arms and blades. they should be straight as seen on your car. tucked down low as they were meant to be hidden.
black on usa cars, silver on euro cars.
i have been unable to find black ones.
what is the serial no. of your car?

 

Another potentially good source for this type of info might be magazines from the era, especially those that specialized in-depth test reporting with extensive detail photography on new cars (R & T, Consumer Report, etc ???)
So if anyone has collections of such and nothing better to do during quarantine...

 

Timo: Daytona's up to about 13700 used Fiamm 6B5 74 amp/hr. Source factory build sheets. This is about the time the traditional build sheets stopped.

 

I don't recall the last time Consumer Reports tested a Ferrari . . .

This is also the one referenced in the users manuals (both '70 and '73 models).

 

Ed: I have no actual information on this. However I would encourage people to look for engine compartment photos of new cars in magazine road tests of the time.

Earlier cars, like the ellena specified on the build sheet the battery type that was installed....

i have a build sheet for GTC #10215 and it calls for a SAFA 6 SNS 5 Battery

other ferrari's specify the type?
