This just started yesterday. I've seen a few other threads about lurching in 1st gear with the F1 gearbox and they all say it's operator error. However I've been driving this car for 5 years and this happened for the first time yesterday. It's definitely a mechanical fault.

Starting from a stop, the car will lurch like it's having a hard time engaging. If I gently let the F1 ease into gear then it will go without any problems. The other gears all seem fine. Also...with the car sat in the garage and turned off, when I select between N and 1st, the normal click of the actuator is now accompanied by a mechanical whirring or slight "grinding" sound that never used to be there.

The car hasn't been in for it's annual yet this year, so I'm hoping this is just related to fluids or something. A few weeks ago the clutch was measured at 79% remaining.

F1 issues make me nervous ($$$). Any ideas on what might be going on?

The only thing that can cause a whirring is the pump, everything else is hydraulic cylinders moving. There are a lot of questions before anyone can venture more than a wild guess: What is the pressure in the system? Are there any error codes in the TCU?

without looking at a sd2/3 and your car, i'd guess

    1. throw out bearing seal/base.
    2. PIS issue ( happened to me: wihtout changing the PIS, the car's pis changed itself)
    3. f1 fluid, maybe a leak, maybe a bubble, maybe something else.

Thanks for the responses so far. How do I measure the pressure in the f1 system?

The car's been sitting in garage since Sat afternoon. Today it clicks from N to 1st like it normally does. The sound I was hearing Sat is gone. This with the engine off. I wonder if the fluid is low and/or system pressure is low. I can see how that could potentially cause bubbles or other F1 pressure issues at temperature. The issue I reported Saturday came at the end of two long drives.

Anyway - I really dislike intermittent issues. I can't relax and enjoy the car when I know something is lurking in there. I will get the system checked out when it goes in for the annual service.

For now I'm happy that it appears normal again.

Sounds like the F1 pump is going bad. Have you checked the condition of the F1 pump relay. Burnt relay is a precursor to the pump failing.

Thanks for the intel! I've done some research on that now and went ahead and ordered a new relay. It can't hurt to throw a new one in there.

Drove the car today and it seemed fine...

And once again we go down the rabbit hole of replacing parts and not diagnosing the problem. Next thread will be 'my F1 is terrible and always broken'. I have seen this story 1000 times.

Get it diagnosed by someone who knows the systems well. You want to replace the relay, fine, but get it diagnosed properly. That means they need proper computers and experience.

According to your profile, you have a 2000 360. This means no PIS adjustment. Take Skidkid advice and suck it up.

This car has a CS TCU. Anyway...like I said I will have it looked at when it goes in for the annual. No harm in swapping in a new relay. You've never heard me complain about this car. I love it.
