I understand what PP is saying. Well, 83% of it anyway.

The situation for me is that the dealer - understandably - won't order in non-OEM parts but is happy to fit them.
So, if something was faulty I'd expect the supplier to replace it but I'd also expect to have to pay the dealer the labour to do the job again.

That's a risk I know going in and am happy to take.

I don't know what type of mechanics you have over there, but here, it's certainly not like that. EVERY mechanic, dealer etc. that SUPPLIES and FITS a part is liable for the warranty of the part, labour and all. If you've been paying, you've been getting ripped off. Consumer law is very clear. The only exceptions would be if YOU supplied the parts, or you bought the parts from a mechanic and YOU fitted them. In the second case, you may be asked to pay for a replacement part while a warranty is being assessed by the supplier/manufacturer, and if it is deemed to be a warranty, you get a refund.

That's why I'm saying don't buy the parts yourself, and if your mechanic can't source the superior parts themselves, and quite frankly any good one would already be using them, then find a new mechanic.

You say that now, Steve, but after you've spend thousands fixing up a screw up that wasn't your fault, you'll feel differently. Keep in mind, the supplier is only obliged to give you a new part.

I reckon if I'd supplied my clutch and brake master cylinder I'd have been $4-5k in the hole.

That's fair enough. Maybe I would.
But for now I’ve put my money where my mouth is - I have at least these Hill Engineering parts in my car which I have supplied myself (clutch release bearing, seal kit, flywheel, and tensioner bearings). I bought those knowing that if they were faulty it would cost me again in labour.

Having said that, I agree with you 96% that if your mechanic is happy to supply non OEM parts you’d be crazy to buy them yourself to save a few $.

Yep...let him have his markup. Everyone is happy and everyone is protected, including the mechanic.

How do you guys sit on the fit yourself/use a mechanic argument?... I have no issue replacing easy-to-replace parts like brake pads/rotors, radiators, interior parts and whatnot.

Then again I'm reasonably mechanically minded and confident enough to do it myself.

I'd still do the by the book servicing because that's what people want to see when they buy a car, but I'm perfectly happy installing a new set of rotors (Just did it last weekend) at a significant saving over going to a dealer. It's really not that hard, oh and quite cathartic too.

Yes I'd agree, and I know first hand. Many years back our Liner supplier had problems with discolouration. These had to be replaced under Warranty. Liners were supplied free of charge, our labour, water and other associated costs were not. I couldn't even imagine asking the customer to cough up for that!!!
