Hello Brothers and Sisters of The Revolution, I was wondering about these portable lifts like Max Jack and some others I can't remember off the top of my head. Do any of them lift the car high enough to pull the engine out the right way and not have to tilt the car? Assume a low profile engine stand. Will anything work? Thank you.
Bendpak makes a low rise for trucks that raises high enough if I recall. The one for cars does not. Other than that you'll need a midrise lift. Lots of them out there. Sent using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I have done many engine drops off Porsches, Ferrari 355 / 348 using a four post lift. I think the mid-rise Max Jax is high enough to drop the engine especially if you remove the bumper.
I have a MaxJax and used it for my last engine out and it worked great. (Probably wouldn't have bought the 348 if I didn't have the MaxJax)
I have the Danmar M6 (Maxjack with more lockpoints). Image attached that I think answers your question. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have the Auto Lift MR6K and it worked to get the engine out in my small garage https://www.bestbuyautoequipment.com/auto-lift-6000lb-portable-mid-rise-frame-lift-p/al-6k-mr-38.htm
Thanks everyone. Sadly I can't do the two post option, I don't have the room and I can't drill into the concrete. The Bendpak MD-6XP looks like a good one that will work but I am worried the arms wont be long enough. Does anyone use one of those? That's pretty cool- what engine stand are you using?
That type of scissor works great, see picture below from another member. Most of those have articulating arms that reach out and are position-able. Like 2 weeks ago... https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/engine-out-major-done.622104/ Image Unavailable, Please Login
Harbor Freight hydraulic table cart. Remove the pins and you get the bar out of the way. It's not quality, but was the right tool for the job. Then you take the engine cradle and put it on jackstands for stability when working on it.
I dislike my mid- rise until the car is in the air. F’n PITA. fwiw my remarks are the ones with the arms you have to reach under car to pry up with your finger tips and position. not the MRK6 style. With flat bottom
I own this same lift. It works great and gets out of the way when not in use. The flow divider sucks, especially on lightweight cars (ie without engine) Also, double check the safety stop arms as I needed to clean up some welds and burs to make sure they moved smoothly in to place. As mentioned, make sure to get the M6 as it has safety stops along the way. Danmar did recently go bankrupt and Bendpak bought the assets so that might be a good thing. I also bought one of these: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200696310_200696310 I have not done the 355 yet, but this is working perfectly on another car I am doing an engine rebuild on.
It looks like the Bendpak MD-6XP to be a good practical lift. Aren't they made in China now? I really would prefer to buy American if I can. With that kind of lift I do worry about the car balancing- both with the engine in and the engine out. Also I'd like the arms to be able to reach as far back to where the a-arms meet on the frame, ala Dave Lelonek's (Sticky RX) excellent lifting and jacking guide. But I think none of them will be able to do that...
Only the classiest. Jackstands on the subframe. With them spread wide enough the hydraulic cart could fit under the center for moving it around. I should probably post an engine rebuild photo thread at some point as the rebuild portion of the job was completed 6 months ago. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Just don’t use the harbor freight jack stands! https://www.thedrive.com/news/33572/harbor-freight-recalls-jack-stands-that-could-suddenly-collapse Image Unavailable, Please Login
Is that accurate, did you weight it I have seen sites that list that number? I ask as I thought the engine, subframe, axles and gearbox was closer to 325kg?
Ok so I have been doing some research on this Bendpak MD-6XP scissor lift but then I saw the weight is something around 800lbs. I know that is taking into consideration the pump and various ancillaries but where do you store these things? I was hoping to lean it up against a wall. Sadly with weight like that I wont be able to lift it, even if the actual lift is slightly less than that.
Leave it on the floor and park car over it. Either that or recess it into the concrete. Image Unavailable, Please Login
