When i go to turn the key the starter engages immediately and starts chugging..... however the car takes a bit to fire up... i usually have to reset the key in the ignition once or twice and give it some gas and even then it kinda slowly fires up:

    Has...

    New plugs
    Extenders
    Wires
    Rebuilt distributor
    Rotor
    Rebuilt starter
    New air filter

    Any ideas?

Maybe bad start injector? Or it’s not getting a signal.

Please advise what that part is? A specific fuel injector?

Does this happen at the first initial cold starting attempt or warm restart attempts or both?

Always possible that you have multiple problems (some affecting cold starting and others affecting warm restarting), but I'd start with some easy common things that would affect both -- for example, unplug the safety switch on the airflow meter (simulating and "open" safety switch), turn the key "on" (you should hear the fuel pump run), then turn the key to "start" and try starting to see if it makes any difference in the behavior.

Just curious about how long it usually takes to start without pushing the throttle?

    Hello all,
    Not trying to be smart,
My 328 starts right up, yet needs a fully charged battery and needs to be cranked "fast". A weak battery WILL NOT start the engine.

308i-2V, 308QV, and 328 (except KE3-Jet) have two different modes for running the fuel pump when starting (depending on the deflection, or not, of the airflow metering plate) -- spinning the crankshaft faster helps deflect the airflow metering plate so favors that mode of fuel pump operation over the other (this is also why opening the throttle plate during starting sometimes helps -- it favors deflecting the airflow metering plate so.uses that mode to operate the fuel pump). IMO, you should try the test described in post #11 if you have a slow cranking situation that won't start -- if it helps, you most likely have a relay that needs replacement.

    Hello Steve,
What you say is totally correct. With ignition on, as you depress the metering plate with your finger, you can hear the fuel pump kick on.
Evidently, if you press the throttle while cranking the engine, more vacuum is created and the metering plate will sink even more. This helps on starting the engine.
I have the habit of stepping on the throttle when starting the engine( like on a carbureted car). I know it's not needed, but bad habits are hard to get away from.
On the other hand, doesn't seem to harm anything.

    John.

So even if all the other electrical aspects of the car are looking good including the starter the car wont actually fire up?

If the car starts more promptly when you force the fuel pump control system to be in the "safety switch open" mode (without using the acc pedal), then you would investigate why the "safety switch closed, but starter motor cranking mode" (without using the acc pedal) isn't working -- easiest thing to do would be to just try using a different ...101 relay in the "G - relay for start injector" position (as it's called in the 1984-85 US version 308QV OM).

Any specific part number for that relay?

The Bosch part number should be stamped into the metal case of the relay (and end in ...101 unless yours has previously been replaced), but you don't need a new one for the test -- just take another one with the same Bosch part number (from say a headlight function position) for the starting test.

PS Many other manufacturers make an equivalent relay. If you need one, and can't get an exact Bosch replacement, just take the old one to any auto parts store -- they can supply an equivalent relay using the complete Bosch part number.

    Afternoon Austin,
Both TDC & RPM sensors are critical on the startup. No only the sensors, the connectors are just as important( had an issue with that). Another point is to not swap these two connectors, car won't start. I know one is black and the other one is white, but, just by a chance the sensors could have been swapped or replaced.

    Just my opinion.

    John.
