Seriously, do you really believe that Mercedes didn't share drawings with Racing Point? And do you really believe that it's that simple just to copy and everything will work flawlessly? The Chinese tried many times to copy aircraft and none ever worked, just when they started to STEAL drawings is when things started to move.
Only based on the initial and expensive efforts of Mercedes. The rest is theft on a large level. I do not applaud or support that for a healthy series...........ever.
Looking at it from Merc's point of view, all I can see is:: There is no upside for us to share any of our design (other than the parts already being sold.) Looking at it from RP point of view:: They already had a pretty tolerable chassis and what they needed was aero. So they use pictures to make a few parts, test and destroy them until they figure out how the internal bracing needs to be to be strong enough; test them in wind tunnels to figure out the subtleties of the aero, then make "final" copies for Barcelona testing. It is not a one step and you are done, copying still requires all of the testing and development of building it yourself.
This not how engineering works. If reverse engineering of a F1 car was obvious, a lot more teams would have done it before. Racing Point buys Mercedes engines and Toto Wolf is now a shareholder in Aston Martin. He simply invoices a higher amount for the engine rentals and in exchange share some drawings with RP.
We had a section of an airplane scanned once and because the supplier didn’t do a rigorous set-up of the reference points and planes the result was worthless garbage. Imagine trying to do this with a camera and translating from pictures. These RP guys obviously have the confidence that they can do this with impunity and this has been already demonstrated by the fact the FIA didn’t even bother to do any actual dimensional checks of the car.
....but it goes against the rules...and what F1 stands for! If the rules said you can use cars produced by others, fine, I'm all for it. But it doesn't.
So if Mercedes themselves didnt provide drawings etc to the Pink team who did? Let's consider an ex employee for example...who goes to let's say Williams (just a random example not pointing fingers!) and comes into close contact with someone who would rather like to get hold of some information and specs , to use at perhaps another team? I believe the rules say that you should own the IP of design you use, and not share it. Haas bought its car design. If Mercedes transfered the IP of the 2019 car design to RP and stopped using it themselves in 2020, MB and RP are not sharing the design! That's just exploiting a loophole in the rules. It works because the 2019 design is still better than the opposition one year later, which is quite remarkable ! Anyway all that boils down to the frustration some people have regarding Mercedes' dominance.

No.But you must own the IP of the design, and not share it. Haas had his cars designed by Dallara, and owns the exclusive rights of that design. That is to satisfy the present rules. I think the Renault appeal against Racing Point could become a test case and validates car design to be transfered in future. To me, that's the logical steps following the forthcoming budget cap to $145m, reduced by $5m every year for a few years. Soon teams won't be able to support a complete design team full time. More parts will become standard too, and shared among teams, etc ...
I am in no position of denying or confirming anything about this case. I am just saying that the present regulations could be interpreted. I am certainly not blaming anyone for copying a design. In this case, the injured party should be Mercedes, and they don't seem to mind.
I love how RP have their spin doctors working the press so that they blur the issue by introducing ideas about how this benefits racing, bla, bla while blatantly disregarding not only the intent of the rules but the rules as written and making it seem like it’s just copying, as opposed to sharing IP - and apparently it’s working. It’s like if a backmarker team shows up with a 2.0 L V6 to the others’ 1.5 L engines and argues that it will spice up the show at little extra cost. Rules are rules.
