Was wondering if anyone has ever weighed the F355 rear subframe?

Last time I saw one bare it seemed a bit heavy to me. Has anyone looked into constructing one of these out of aluminum?

I personally wouldn't attempt this for 2 reasons. (Do have an engineering degree, but it's been years since applying it in this way)

    1. Aluminum's yield strength is finite wheras steel goes through work hardening. Meaning once aluminum starts to fail, it's gone. With steel it actually gives you some margin at yield, where if it's a temporary load, it may be ok and not yield.
    2. The rear subframe sees a lot of vibration from the motor and road. If Ferrari did their job correctly, they would have tuned weight of parts to limit natural harmonics. The lighter you go, the higher the frequencies that will resonate through the subframe.

And 3, using the engine subframe as a jacking point to get to quick jobs in the rear, I don't know that I'd trust aluminum not engineered in CAD from the factory.

Agree, I’ve been lugging mine around (to powder coater and back), I would not have described it is heavy.

I was thinking of doing an alloy one, then changed to the idea of chromoly. Sounds like it may not be worth doing.
