During oil change, I stripped this hole's thread, and I wonder why the plug is made of harder metal than the hole itself. Scratching my head.

I don't know the torque value on this but when I was removing it, it's like 70NM or more.
    Isn't that too much?

Due to all the liquid gasket along the edge of the plate, I don't know how to pry it off because there isn't any leverage on the edge. Any tricks?

Is a specialist able to helicoil this hole? Or I need to buy a new plate?

Can be helicoiled. Hill engineering has a more robust replacement. Not too costly.

Forgot to add that the torque spec in the WSM is not correct. 70NM is too high.

I just recently installed the Hill Engineering piece. Do that. Its high quality and surpasses the helicoil idea in simplicity and you will never have to think about it again.

Taking the old one off may require a putty knife or plastic wedge. Compromise the old plate and be careful with the case surface please.

Don't even mess with a helicoil

You may be able to put a dowel pin in some of the hole locations and pull sideways on that to get it started. Trick is to not put it so far in that you damage threads and should be as close to the diameter as possible.

I don't know that there is an agreed torque spec but like most copper crush washers, you are just going enough to collapse the washer some.

I have 3 different versions of the WSM and they all say 75 newton meters (around 55 foot pounds). I just torqued mine to that yesterday and it "felt" as though the washer was getting seated right as I approached the spec so I thought it was good. Do you think that folks are doing 75 foot pounds?

That is about 2x what is needed. The number should be about 25 ft-lb. There are countless stripped plugs and plates out there to prove it. I stripped a plug the first time I did one, fortunately not the plate. Not to mention that torques are done dry and there is literally no way to do it without oil on the plug lubricating the threads.

I poked around a bit and see that for the 458 the spec is 60nm.

Is that plate glued on? Some sort of special silicone?
I would just use a helicoil because I use them frequently for occasions just like this one. Seems strange that the oil plate is glued on.
About the torque. All that needs to be done is tighten enough to crush the new washer. Snug up plug and then 1/8 to 1/4 turn according to Aldous voice.

yes, it is glued on, and the silicon is pretty much everywhere on the 360. cyl head rear end plate for one.

The torque spec is way too high. I just treat it like any other drain plug.

Hope for a reply on this. Recently made the same mistake with the oil plug torque spec. So, how do you break the plate free after removing the bolts holding it in place? What do you use to seal the new plate (is there a gasket?)? What is the "suggested" torque of the bolts that mount the plate to the engine?

    Thank You

I didn't . Finally, i found that its actually the plug itself is damaged. replaced the plug and all done. But sooner or later I'd think i have to tackle it

If you can find a cut off disk grinder, you can grind a small 45 degree chamfer on the plate so you can get a screwdriver end in, to separate the cover from the casing- never use household silicon on an engine as far too strong.
