BTW, has anyone else noticed FCA recent promo info for the Maserati Quattroporte Trofeo, Alfa Stelvio, and Giulia all feature dark green paint?
What's going on there? Trying to project a "green" image...
This colour reminds me very much of the mid-60s Audi return to the U.S. market when they proudly sent 80% of the colour preferred by their German clients only to have it ignored by the N.A. - oops.

A ugly as these all are they should have gone to an RV company to get a Class A.

It is as if they had to make them intentionally ugly so it had a proper functional appearance.

Yeah! With the effort they put into that first one (multiple materials and parts etc), it could have been pretty cool.

    Interesting.

As the name implies, green/gold, and very appropriate. Amazing how Fitzpatrick captures the color and metallic sheen in those paintings, especially the last one.

I don't know how much Pontiac paid those guys but between the stylists and these two I think they were responsible for a good chunk of Pontiac sales.

Do you know if these were done with paintbrushes and what size were the originals?

When I was running one of the Pontiac Exterior Studios, I became friends with Art Fitzpatrick. Yes the work was done 'old school' method with paint, brushes on board. He managed to save many of the originals, and they were donated to a Car Museum right before his passing several years ago. There is a book in the making that should be out soon. The sizes varied, but they weren't as large as you might think. One of my friends has several originals and cherishes them. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

It's interesting that the 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix is shown. The Motor Trend 'Car of the Year' was actually given to the whole Pontiac model lineup for 1965 rather than a specific model! Pete Estes accepted the COTY award on behalf of the Pontiac Motor Division.
The art work often featured exotic locales enjoyed by the 'beautiful people' which added to the allure of a special 'wide-track' Pontiac...

When I asked Mr. Fitzpatrick about the Pontiac ads, he worked in Michigan and Mr. Kaufman worked on the East Coast. Before the internet. They said they dreamed up the locales as inspiration. They knew no one would be driving a Pontiac in Monte Carlo, etc.

He said he put himself in the water as a scuba diver on this ad for '68.

Although Pontiac may or may not have been fully deserving of the COTY that year, please grasp that Petersen Publications viewed the award as a business proposition for Motor Trend. Advertising commitments for the year by a manufacturer was an element in the selection process. Two stories on that point: (1) When the Grand Am lost to the Monte Carlo in 1973 it was because Chevrolet was willing to make a larger ad buy than Pontiac. (2) When the initial Import Car of the Year was awarded to the Citroen SM, Bob Petersen went ballistic. Citroen never advertised and having the award was not going to change that.

    Cool story.

So was Fitzpatrick (he did the car—as opposed to the background—yes?) a designer? He must have been because a “non car guy” artist, even as good as he was, I think would not be able to appreciate how to present the car for maximum effect and mostly would not be able to capture the form, details but mostly the proportions of a car like the stylist intended.

Also, did he use any aids like straight edges, French curves or other templates or was it all freehand? I ask because the shut lines for example are so clean and straight and the ellipses of the wheels in perspective are spot on.

He started out as a designer. Went to the local Design College here in Michigan, The College for Creative Studies (CCS). I believe he first began his career as a car designer at a Detroit Mfg. I'll check his bio.

Art Fitzpatrick did the cars and Van Kaufman did the backgrounds.

It's funny, but I never asked the specifics of how he did his renderings. However, I am going to assume (and that's a dangerous proposition) that he worked like all the illustrators of that era. Using a 'bridge' for straight lines and sweeps and French Curves to guide his brush strokes. For the ellipses i think he would have used ellipse guides, but i cant be sure that was what he did.

I had Jack Lynnwood as an instructor for an Rendering Class while at Art Center. He was famous for the aircraft renderings on Revell model boxtops in the '50's - '70's. He used both sweeps and French Curves along with whatever else was handy.

Before that was the 58 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser with an almost vertical rear window... that actually rolled down, on a coupe.
