Swapping 458 for 675LT or Speciale?

LOL yet 2 people above you said it has lag.

 

Maybe some actual owners can chime in and confirm this lag I’m not perceiving. Otherwise it’s just useless conjecture. Maybe I should start sharing my opinions about how the La Ferrari drives, I’ve never driven one but why should that matter?

 

I can tell you I’ve driven one and it does have lag. It’s a turbo - physics and engineering dictates that they all have lag. It’s not terrible but it’s there. The 488 spends some of its extra torque to minimise it so you can barely feel it, but it’s still there. The 675 doesn’t bother, it’s taking a different route. It’s designed to be as fast as possible so no thought of reducing torque to disguise lag. Nothing wrong with that, just different as many have been saying all along.

When you drive one on mountain roads with plenty of hairpins, the 488 pulls away out of the bend because the 675 gets caught out of its powerband and you have to wait for the turbos to get going. I have seen that at least 100 times. You can get around it by dropping the 675 to 1st gear but that is not smooth and introduces other problems with traction. No car is perfect, every single one of them is a collection of multiple compromises. That is why the only discussion is which suits a person best, these days, x is better than y is just facile.

 

...case in point. I have had a number of cars delivered recently, just the way it worked out (some late, some early, some on time). The latest is an F8 Tributo. I was going to cancel it when I realised the others were all going to arrive about the same time. My son-in-law loves cars but was diagnosed with a very serious health issue early last year and is not allowed to drive for an extended period. So I suggested he spec the F8, which he loved doing. I therefore didn’t cancel.

This year I took a long roadtrip in our Pista Spider, then another one in our 812 GTS. Both wonderful cars, and cars that many would consider very desirable. But I can tell you, the F8 has its place and offers something different. It is prettier (IMO than the Pista, especially in spider form), it is so fast, like shockingly fast - no surprise, it has the Pista engine - it is great to drive super-quickly, no fuss, no hassle, just a lovely car. And those who say the sound is terrible, well it isn’t from the important seat. It’s no 812 or even 458, but it sounds good and fulfils it’s main responsibility, which is to become part of the whole driving experience.

Many will simply not feel it’s hardcore enough, or sounds good enough to those outside (that is a bit illogical to a driver, but maybe not for someone who wants attention). It won’t be for them. There are occasions when it is just less fuss than a Pista though, and for those who own one long term (I won’t), there is absolutely nothing wrong with that car when generally compared to other cars. It has its weaknesses, like them all, but it stands good comparison. We’re all very privileged to be able to own any of them.

 

Lag is only relative when compared to other Turbo cars..In isolation lag on the 675LT might not perceived to be significant however when driven back to back with a 488 it becomes much more obvious..Ferrari seem to be the only car maker to seem to have made the effort to make their turbo engines perform like NA..

 

All turbocharged cars have some degree of lag. The 675 has noticeably more than say a GT2 RS, which in turn has more than a Pista. Personally, I don’t mind if a turbocharged car feels turbocharged as it offers a unique driving experience rather than just an NA engine with a lot of torque.

 

I must not be familiar enough with the sensation. My impression of turbo lag is a noticeable increase in power when accelerating. My car never feels off boost. Now my old Lotus Esprit S4S 4 cylinder had real turbo lag. My M6 also doesn’t exhibit turbo lag but because of the inherent nature of turbocharged power delivery it doesn’t accelerate in the same way as my old V10 M5

 

You are correct I have not driven one so I don’t personally know the 675 has lag but enough people who do own them have said that it has leg so I believe it. Doesn’t mean it isn’t a great car so don’t take it personally. I had a Heavily modified 996 turbo that was fast as heck but had big turbos and major lag. Because of that I’m not a fan of turbo lag but that’s just my preference.

 

Ya, listen to the same guy who bohemiantly said these will appreciate lol...is the lag massive like let’s say a 996 Turbo? No, but it’s definitely there and anyone who denies it must have a dead bum or is full of croc or both. It’s notably better than the 570 though.

 

I’m not looking to mislead anyone I’m just posting my personal experience and asking owners to comment that have regular real world experience with the car to comment on the issue. I’ve have no agenda other than to share with people how much I enjoy the car. Also, I don’t remember stating that the 675 would appreciate but I have responded to remarks that the car would depreciate ongoing at that appears to be the case because prices have firmed up. I’m finished sharing my thoughts on this thread because I have nothing else to add. Hopefully the OP finds what he’s looking for.

 

The 675LT is one of the most special cars created by any car maker in the last couple of decades, lag or no lag..Only 500 number plagued coupes and 500 number plagued Spiders virtually guarantees future desirability and collector status in years to come..A watershed moment for McLaren IMO.

 

Oh, it only dropped $50-75k since...lol, basically now you can get a spider for the same price as a coupe since your “prices have firmed up” claim. Only exception has been examples w roof scoops...

I personally believe the depreciation will continue through the release of the 765LT.

Fun stat: 8/10 people originally looking at a 675LT ultimately get a 600LT...personally, I’d also pick up the latter, has more special sauce to me.

And to be clear, not knocking on either LT cars; they are pretty amazing value and to my eyes, some of the best of Frank Stephenson’s/Mclaren’s DNA and design language...we are truly in the golden era of super cars.

 

All the current super cars are stellar performers. They are differentiated by their individual personas and driving dynamics. Recommendations from others are predicated on their preferences and priorities which may not coincide with yours.Without personal driving time in the car, you are taking a huge risk that your choice will not satisfy your preferences and priorities.

 

In 5 years the Speciale will be worth a heap more.

The problem with this line of thinking is that you might be dead in 5 years.

 

Funny thing is my ‘18 Porsche GT3 has a NA engine but the torque curve is so steep in mid range it feels just like “turbo lag.” Despite that the car is an absolute hoot to drive.
To me what is most important is the overall character of a car, it’s perspnality if you will.

I dont think so, the price points are so far off. If anything it may bounce the price up on the 675's.

 

Sit rep, drove the LT. Was a bit too tight inside for me to gel with with the standard seats. I'm seeing on trading the 458 in on a Pista and how the numbers look. Question for those in the know, and this isn't a must but just exploratory. The Pista has the front cameras, which I do not like the look of. To have that replaced with a standard front end, am I looking at a ridiculous sum of money?

 

I also have the front camera on mine, and it looks odd. Asked the dealer about changing it, and he says it would also require a full re-program of the system or possibly replacing the electronic unit otherwise. To make matters worse, that requires key, immobiliser etc have to be redone too as a result. He didn't give me a number, but just said crazy money.

 

Do you find the functionality of the cameras is worth the look? Are they less noticeable in person (eye view of the car) than in photos?

 

For me not worth it on the Pista spider compared to the longer nose 812. Definitely looks worse in photos for me vs real life. In photos the eye seems more easily drawn towards it as you follow the lines down. Ultimately an annoyance I can live with (a bit like the oddly placed shark fin antenna on the rear deck) .

My friend owns a 675 and the sudden power is one of the things he loves the most with the car.

 

Why not just find one setup the way you like it? There are more than a few for sale.
