Has any American designer ever talked to Paolo Martin about the Allante design? He did the Ro-80, the 206 yellow prototype, the Modulo and many other famous prototypes but I wouldn't say the Allante was one of his winners.. I think it was supposed to be pure Pininfarina but Chuck Jordan told me personally he got a peak at it. i wonder if Martin changed it to "look more GM?" so though it's Italianess has been compromised this article at least says it's cheap now, about 1/0th the cost of the most expensive version when new, a mighty drop in value.

Mr. Martin was long gone when the Allante was done. In charge was Fioravanti (he of 308, BB, 288 GTO and F40 game, among other notable designs) with Ramaciotti and Fumia.

I think there was an element of trying to imagine what GM or American public wanted in a Cadillac—I think the design and sketches done for the Allante were not really in keeping with their style from that time—but a GM insider ;-) from a few pages had this to say:

Some of the proposals—some of these look like Chryslers, including a TC lookalike—and the chosen design:

I was the Assist. Chief Designer in the Cadillac Studio during this time period. Yes, Mr. Jordan got a look at the Allante', but he did not make any changes or alterations to the Allante' design. I know because I asked him on several occasions. As I stated previously, Cadillac got exactly what they requested. A design by Pininfarina unlike any other Cadillacs in their lineup, or any previous Cadillac designs. I have in my collection a multitude of design sketch proposals. We never showed most of our work to senior Cadillac management. As a 'token' to the Cadillac Studio, they 'allowed' us to create a full size clay model. It was an 'exercise' in futility, and nothing ever came of it.

Pininfarina had a relationship with Cadillac in the '50's - '60's. That was one of the reasons Cadillac chose them for the Allante'.

As far as the actual design goes, Pininfarina (Fioravanti) did a non controversial design. Over the years, Pininfarina, Bertone & Giugiaro would send full size proposals to GM looking for possible design work. Some were better than others. At that time the Italian Design Houses had a unique view of what American Design was all about. Bertone did the Ramarro Corvette during the same mid '80's time frame as the Allante'. Giugiaro sent over a Buick proposal as well. The only success was the Pininfarina Allante'.

There was one upside for me during the whole affair. When Pininfarina finally brought their fiberglass car to GM Design, there were a couple support personnel with the car to make sure everything was good with the model. After all the dog & pony shows I got one of them to 'donate' his coveralls to a 'good cause'. Just because. ;)

The black coupe with the tan interior pass side view has sort of a Daytona swoop to the nose and a bit of those wrap around lights to! The checker board tail lights on the final picture are interesting; big tires to. Quite an array of ideas there but the underlying theme throughout is 'clean' without a lot of gingerbread...
Almost forgot the silver convertible with the tan interior is sweet to.

Nice observations. It was my singular mission to break away from the 'gingerbread era' of design and clean things up, but still retain Cadillac cues.
In that round, I failed.
Many years later, I was luckier. ;)

    That's why I like it!

"Just" is too modest, obviously. It's a bit rough and raw but you can see how it was drawn and captures the intent of your ideas.

Four years later the GM vertical rear window had it's greatest run starting in 1967 with the introduction of the 1968 Corvette coupe. Though the flying buttress design feature hid this window design characteristic from some angles. Still the Corvette continued with the vertical rear window treatment for a decade until the redesign of the 1978 Corvette was introduced. The unique initial feature of the opportunity to remove the rear window however only lasted until the 1972 model year Corvette.

Mercury and Lincoln were enamored with the vertical backlight. The Mercury TurnPike Cruiser was certainly a standout. These cars weren't what I would call exemplary designs but they were quite unique for their time. Personally, I believe they will have to answer at the tribunals I had mentioned earlier!
