Sorry for the silly question.
How much lighter is the Carbon set compared with the forged wheel set?

 

Not a silly question at all.
Seeing how its Friday afternoon, I only had time to weigh one C/F front wheel vs Forged front wheel

C/F 17.8 lbs

What forged front did you use? Weighted a Pista Spider front and it was 21 lbs. A regular Pista wheel is supposedly 20 lbs.

Ah, I went back and re-read the question... now I understand what was being asked.

Il Co-Pilota would more than likely be correct, as I do not have a loose Pista wheel to weigh, so I defer to his results,

No worries. Was just curious as there are quite a few forged options between the 488/F8 model range. Just something to consider depending on what a buyer is looking for. The weight saving over a GTB is massive, but it's less interesting from a Pista point of view.

I was interested in the Carbon Revolution product for my 458. I contacted the company and was told that they don’t have an aftermarket rim set.

Waiting for my F8 Have ordered the forged diamond finish rims. Once I get a chance to drive it I’ll get an idea if I want to push the performance envelope a bit more.

If I do, I think the first step will be to swap in a Braille Li Ion battery which will shed 30 pounds and cost $2600.

I know unsparing weight is better

 

Adding all the little lightweight bits is a nice addition for sure, but remember that there's a lot to be gained by adjusting a few parameters a bit.

Also, braided brake lines is a cheap, but significant upgrade of how the brakes and ultimately how the car feels. As an added bonus, braided ptfe lines also greatly reduces the amount of water diffusing through the lines..

I’ve heard that they had to develop a special heat paint in order to deal with brake heat melting the rims. Would be a great improvement on the track. Curbing a wheel presents a proble when dealing with Ferrari because I heard that the factory will only sell a complete set.

Should ask what are they really worth ? If they were Porsche you can buy from Carbon Revolution about $7,000 USD, That's 4 rims BTW.

Its how Ferrari controls prices

I got in contact with them as soon as it was announced . I was born in Geelong ( and have many friends still there ( read between the lines ))

They wont sell you a wheel if it has a contract with a manufacturer. So Ferrari is out no matter if it isn't a Pista..I can assure you they are not making 30K USD.

What is crazy is that even if I pay full price what Ferrari would charge, im not allowed to go and pick them up.1 hr drive . I would have to order the wheels , they will go to Italy then they will be sent back to Melbourne for me to pick up. Go figure ?

 

Typical. The supplier gets a sole source contract and Ferrari does not allow them to create competition under the deal. Usually doesn't last forever.

Ive called every year and still get the same answer. Im thinking it wont last forever also but if they have an option for the SF-90 or LB its see you latter

 

It will not last forever because I'm not even sure it is legal. Ferrari has some very dubious practices in certain areas and this is one of them.

You can get wheels that are in that same weight range from Forgeline. An F8/Pista spec front can be made to weigh between 18 and 19 lbs. Depending on design. And if yo go with their alloy/CF hybrid it is even lighter.

That being said, I think it is interesting to hear what Gordon Murray has to say. He brings up an interesting point abiut carbon fiber having a catastrophic failure mode. He knows composites better than most, and he chases every last gram like there's no tomorrow. And yet he will not use CF wheels as he deems them highly unsafe.
I'm no expert on CF wheels, but I know this. When CF fails, it cracks and shatters. Aluminium and magnesium deforms, stretches and develops stress cracks that moves slow.
So the concept is that one wheel will be fine until it fails at which point it goes bang in a dusty cloud, and the other will bend and you have more time to act on it.

You definitely wouldn’t want to be hoofing down the autobahn at 200mph and have one of those wheels shatter on you!!

Ive been around composites over 30 years, I would never use them on the rims. I actually had iforge rims on another car, highly recommended.and much better pricing than HRE.

By coincidence an engineering machine shop that has made lots of products for me only 2 kms from me made the steel moulds for the Pista Carbon Tech rims, Ha .

 

Careful. I think if we keep this up we will find ourselves with either a bright red dot in the forehead or a Cavalino head in our beds some day.
