In another thread, I mentioned that I removed the soft-touch coating on the steering column and map light covers on my scud. Now I'm wondering if I should paint or clear coat them. If so, I'd use a satin finish.

On the one hand, the parts look okay, but a little Camry, stripped bare. While a nice, even satin finish would be nice, my concern is that paint/clearcoat could get scratched off, especially near the ignition keyhole (possibly by a tech who is less careful than me). If so, I'd want to remove the parts again to respray. Not a huge deal, but I wouldn't want to have to do this on a regular basis.

What do you guys think? Leave it au naturale or paint/clearcoat the parts? For others who have removed your soft-touch coating, what did you do? If you painted/clearcoated, how is it holding up?

    Many thanks,

    Dave

I would not paint or clear coat. There are many sprays that are used for correcting dull exterior black parts like bumper trim. Put a little on a clean rag and rub it on the interior de-goo-ed pieces. Simple and very effective

I just de-stickied the steering housing and then I put on Jescar synthetic wax on it. It’s crazy but worked real well. You could even use one of the crystal wax hybrids that would work even better I would think as it supposed to last long, plus it’s in the interior with minimal sun.

Best of all, you can do it in 2 minutes...

What did you use to degoo?
My friend who runs Motorcar Gallery told me that Westley’s Whitewall cleaner is very effective and doesn’t damage the plastic. Works perfectly.

70% rubbing alcohol from the drug store. Came off really easily. Other parts took a lot of rubbing, the shroud was easy

There is a product called Bulldog available in Auto Paint supply stores. It's a prep wipe down for plastic parts to insure good adhesion of paint. If you use it you can usually spray the parts with a good paint of your choice (even a quality rattle can) and it will usually hold up really well. I have used it to change the color of plastic trim pieces (including handles) on seats with good results.

When I had my 360 I sent mine to a good upholstery shop and had alcantara applied. Today I would send it off to Dave Lelonek to have it refinished!

I sprayed mine with Krylon satin black and I like it. I am pretty careful when putting the key in the ignition so I don't ever have to do all of that again.

I used paint brush cleaner. If you soaked it all night, it would eat up the plastic. But for a quick wipe down, it worked like a champ.

Good idea. I think I'll try this first and see how it performs. Chemical Guys have a dressing compound that is highly reviewed on Amazon. Thanks for the suggestion.
