Sorry to hassle but just got to eurotunnel and been driven nuts by a noise I thought was a dodgy fan in air con are (it’s under centre of dash) but it sounds jolly odd (and not like it was last week!).

I now discover I can’t post a video on here it seems but it’s a rattly/tapping sound from the entire engine. with bonnet up.

I have sent video to Fuoco in case he can comment more.

After long steady run on motorway at no more than 80 MPH

Am I just being a being paranoid new owner - 1,600 miles for tour to come makes me a touch worried! If it is normal it sounds awful and is driving me nuts.

    Thanks in advance.

My F12 always made a very mechanical sound, gears gnashing/tapping, generally coming from the center of the dash. I think valve train is old-school noisy (sonorous Ferrari V12 magic) and with it being front-mid-engined it is right there almost in the cockpit.
I don’t know exactly the sound you are attempting to describe but my guess is it is normal.

Brilliant thanks - appreciated and all sounded fun on way into EuroTunnel - was just very odd and perhaps perfectly normal but that’s why these forums are so useful to share concerns!

Yep centre of the dash - like a broken extractor fan in a bathroom but louder and rises and falls with revs. Luckily the faster you go the more it case but with 450 miles of motorway tomorrow it was a touch vexing. Have to work out how to turn stereo on I guess!

Mine has a slight ‘mechanical’ tinkle that rises and falls with revs. I just put it down to proximity of the motor to the bulkhead

Sounds very much like it and has settled a bit so not idea.

Air Con randomly stopped working too - centre vent was freezing but no cool air and opening and closing vents made no difference. Damn annoying in 30 degrees on way through France. Stopped car and when restarted it magically appeared to come back to life! It’s all about getting to know her though I guess.

One thing I wondered - does the engine mode make a difference to economy does anyone know? Obviously Sport and race alter the mapping but, on a cruise of 400 miles down motorway it’s bumpy road mode and chilling so if I stick it in Wet does that make any actual difference? Cruise control on at 90MPH/150KPH and was getting accurate 18 MPG on 400 miles run which was not unexpected but hoped for 20-21. This is brim to brim and measured against actual mileage of course.

Again, apologies for all the annoying questions!

I’m new to this too and it’s certainly a ‘learning experience’. I get 10 on urban, 18 on mixed and 21 at a steady 82 (in France obvs). I think that 8mph is the difference. I think you’re London based as am I (sw London). DM me if you want to meet up and compare newbie notes

Hi Rog, seen your threads on here and over at PH. I got my F12 back in February and a few things the dealer has told me are “all part of ownership”...

    - tappy noise I get too never asked about it
    - aircon I have exact same issue sometimes doesn’t work so stop restart it starts working. Dealer @ Wilmslow said this is “one of those things” - a bit like the speakers stopping working every so often (only happened 3 times)

this is my first Ferrari so tending to take advice from dealer and when I was shopping around a few cars that hadnt been started in a while had the “electrical fault” message

    part of ownership I gueas

Brilliant thanks, it’s the same as when new GT-R owners worry about the drive train sounding like a tractor or clunks when reversing I suppose!

Air Con now works brilliantly again. It’s a brand new battery and delivering 13.2v to the 12V socket for the radios so that seems ok. Might swap to to Lithium battery to ensure I cure any issues there and just enjoy it once I get to know her quirks!

Also had the air bag recall done and is now a random string hanging into passenger footwell?!? Bizarre. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Sounds great idea, thanks, will DM once back in UK and let out of quarantine!

Will try Wet mode cruise at 90 today and compare economy just out of interest.

Someone I know who bought a F12 last year became paranoid with a rattle that he said he could ear always after he started the engine. One day we put his F12 and mine side by side and we got inside both cars and listen. To me they sounded identical and I couldn't ear any rattle but he insisted that he could ear it on his car and not on mine. We are all different and some have more sensitive ears than others.
However, I presume the noise you reported isn't an extra-sensorial but an audible one and that can be a very annoying thing but can be fixed and if you search on the internet " How to diagnose and fix a dash rattle" you'll find several helpful tips.

I believe that string is to open the glovebox if there is no power...just tuck it up under the dash...

I had two odd loud clunk sounds going from R to 1 and then 1 to 2 the other day. Just that one drive. The second time it happened I thought I might have run over something on the road...
