Strange rattling at 1600 RPMs

    I’ve got a 2012 California that is due for its 20k service that has developed a rattling metallic sound from underneath somewhere every time it’s been run warm and passes 1600 RPM.
    No noise at all at any other RPMs.
    No noise when revving past that RPM in neutral.

    Does anyone have any idea of what could be causing the rattle?

    I’m thinking a lose heat shield for the exhaust would make noise at other RPMs too?!

    I think you could be right.
    It’s been 2 years since I swapped them and I have been feeling the vibrations slowly coming back so I think it’s time to replace them again.

    I’ll report back with findings after I swapped them out.

    Had a similar issue recently, it was the engine mounts. Had them replaced and now completely smooth.

    It ended up being approx ~$1400 with parts and labor. I went to a local service shop that specializes in Exotics rather than through a Ferrari dealership directly. The parts were ordered from Scuderia.

    It sounds like one or both of the exhaust damping weights has separated and is vibrating. They are large rubber cylinders (about the size of skateboard wheels) that are bonded to a metal mount which is bolted to the middle of the exhaust system. They change the harmonic frequency of the exhaust system in order to reduce noise/vibration. With time the rubber comes un-bonded from the metal mount, and they make a rattle at a specific RPM.

    You can see if they are loose and remove them from the exhaust to see if the noise goes away. They are on the pricey side (part# 252174, $200 each).

    I had a buzz at 2800 rpm. Swore it was the exhaust heat shields. Fiddled until blue in the face no luck. Then my kids hopped in the back and the buzz was gone. Turns out it was a seatbelt clip... damn did I spend time under that car looking for a buzzing heat shield. ... oh well. It at least it’s gone now. Lol [emoji23]
