The OP is in an excellent position to buy the 458. He clears his bills with comfort and never had a need for the $600K. The only question would be the spec and condition. There is no trophy in dying with good money in the bank and unfulfilled lust. I'd further say that when you get into late 60s the time for a mid engine Ferrari is kinda over. Get it now, drive it for five or six years and then sell for most of your money back. Will not impact your net worth greater than it increased your quality of life.

A 430 at 1/2 the price might be a decent alternative, or even a 360. You will have just as much fun, they are pretty much bottom of any curve now and you can wrench on them if you like.

My pic would be a Scuderia, should hold the money best @ $ 150-160K

so apparently the guy who runs Highline autos put on a car meet today. We were going to go but he Scuderia guys were hosting their monthly event at their new location in DC Ranch. The plan was to go to dc ranch which is close to my house and then head to fashion square. @Dicecal did the opposite and went to fashion square first as that was closer to him and then came to DC Ranch. He told us that the fashion square meet up was crap and we never made it down. He saved us a trip. Anyways- new Scuderia location is DCRanch and it’s spectacular. Much more intimate than mayo.

Fashion Square was a mess, way too many cars (quantity not quality) that obviously they did not have a plan for. I got there right at the start time and they were parking all the cars in the mall parking garage. Just blew thru and went up to DC ranch... very nice, relaxing event!

I agree with every word written here. After years of riding Ducati motorcycles and building up a nice collection, I decided it was time for a change. My wife hated me riding motorcycles anyway so I sold them and decided to buy a Ferrari 458. The Speciale is exactly that, very special. It looks a million dollars and will always hold it’s value. However, it’s just a bit too much for street use. If you want to have a track day weapon or rag it out on the street, buy one. For everyday use, it’s a bit too fatiguing for me. The 458 Italia is a very flexible vehicle. In auto mode and below 3,500 rpm, you can drive in 7th gear at 20 mph and it swoosh along without any drama. The gear changes are smooth, it’s incredibly comfortable and very refined. Now, switch to using the flappy paddles and raise the revs and it becomes a real Jekyll and Hyde character. It really does become and rabidly fast beast with brutal gear changes and a howling exhaust note. To my mind, it’s the end of an era. The last naturally aspirated V8 and last Pininfarina designed Ferrari. It’s a very elegant and flexible car. Mine has an amazing specification as the original owner ticked every carbon fibre option. It’s my first Ferrari and I’m 57. Go for it is all I can say !

    You're most welcome.

BTW, have you ever test driven the V12 Lusso? The Lusso doesn't receive a lot of love, but it's actually an amazingly fun car to drive.

One year at Laguna Seca, Ferrari was giving out free test drives in the Lusso; so my girlfriend and I took them up on their offer to go for a test drive. I have to say, I was very impressed - and at the time I owned my 458. The Lusso is very powerful and refined. It might not be quite as curb-hugging on a tight, twisty road, but otherwise it's a joy to drive.
