550 Maranello production numbers by color

Is there a definitive source for production numbers by color for the 550 Maranello? I've done some searching but not found anything. I'm just curious to know about this topic.

 

No, there is not. Unlike Corvette, Ferrari does not normally publish that kind of info. Some keepers of registers can make approximations based on the data they have.

no it was a list. I remember it said that dark blue with cream like mine had 18 units made in Euro spec... Should be possible to dig it up here.

 

As I recall this was published by Ferrari themselves about ten years ago in their Official Magazine and covers their entire production over that period

I was in charge of the team producing The Official Ferrari Magazine (TOFM) from around 2010 onwards here at Conde Nast. There is an archive of issues in the office. We no longer publish it (it is done in house) but I can ask someone to take a look through in the office - once they are allowed back in the office. Or if there is more precise detail about the issue date, let me know and I will go in myself and try and dig it out.

Thanks for the responses with very useful information! It seems there were 10.46% blue which is 322 blue out of total 3,083 550M's over the production years. I'm assuming "blue" contains TDF Blue, Blue Pozzi, and that light blue shade which I don't know the name of. My 550M is TDF Blue with dark blue interior without colored piping so was curious to get a better guess at how many others there may be out there like mine.

 

There are a number of different blues. I have this data for 456M models in the US. Total percentage of blue cars of various shades is 21%. Blue TdF, Blu Pozzi, Blue Sera, Blue NART, Blue LeMans, and Azzuro California. Some will say that Grigio Alloy is actually a blue.....It is a silver grey with a distinct blue cast to it. Of all these, Blue TdF is more than twice as many as all the other blues combined, so roughly 13% of total production and all the other blues make up 8%. I doubt the distribution of colors on 550s is substantially different, at least for the blues. There are very few 456Ms in red, only one known in white. Plenty of 550s in red..

 

VS2K- Those are the color production numbers for all Ferraris during that time period. The number of V8s dwarfs the Maranello's production during that period, so an accurate extrapolation of Maranello colors is not possible using that data. The percentage of blue and gray cars for the V12s most likely exceeds that for the V8 population, where Rosso Corsa really rules.

There are no 550Ms. There are 550 and 575M Maranellos. The M in 575M stands for Modificata or modified, as in modified from the 550 .

 

That's a bit pedantic Taz! 550M is just for those who can't be bothered to type Maranello all the time haha.

 

Good point, I keep using "550M" as shorthand for 550 Maranello but that is indeed incorrect.

 

JT- 550 works fine for shorthand and is technically correct. Unless, of course, someone is going to confuse a Maranello with a Mercedes like my wife's old GL 550.

Yup. But everybody with a Barchetta makes sure you know it is not a vanilla 550.

I was commenting this weekend to @ferraridriver that perhaps his car should be considered a 550M (agreeing with you that there was not an 550M but Dave's might be one of the most well evolved 550's).

 

Given the age of the 550 now, I wonder whether the more rare colors will have at least match value with the standard "resale red." If I remember correctly, I believe in the Testarossa, black and white were rare colors and now get higher prices on resale than red. I appreciate someone who has actual facts here vs. my hearsay.
