We were eating inside a restaurant today and while looking out the window we noted a couple of people closely examining our Cali T. The guy went back to his car, grabbed his phone, came back, and took a close-up of the VIN # + windshield reg sticker. I couldn't get out there quick enough to inquire why but was able to take photo of the guy in his Merc SL and his Texas dealer license plate 8E1 179. VINs are clearly publicly accessible info so it shouldn't be anything at all. But why would he or anyone want that record? Anyone have this happen to them and any untoward results?

If he is a dealer, probably wanted to run the vin through the dealer system to find out where the car was sold and for how much. Find out if it was hit etc

That's weird. I'd track the guy down and ask. Could be totally innocuous!

I wouldn’t worry about it. Any number of Ferraris are parked on the street or wherever with VINs in full view 365/24/7. . He was probably admiring your car and hoping he could buy it one day

Carbon McCoy for sure! LOL! And don't forget Hil Raab, Jr. and his two books on Ferrari serial numbers. Those early guys like Hil had to ask the owners as the S/N was under the bonnet. Also the owners back then loved to share information. Alas, different times.

A guy in a dealer-plated SL63 shouldn't be too concerning. If I had to guess, maybe they are looking for inventory and will send something in the mail later interestd in your car if the carfax is clean (rather than leave a note on the window). Based on your avatar, your car is in a unique color so maybe they are even trying to figure out exactly what color it is based off the VIN if the guy wants one the same.

It turns out it was indeed a local, small-time dealer - R&D Motors, driving this. I know the VIN is publicly accessible information but still somewhat provocative to record it so decided to initiate contact to see what the planned use for recording this information. Awaiting response.

Why was Carbon McCoy banned? He's active on other social media and he loves collecting S/Ns. He used to write for The Ferrari Market Letter.

Well the SL63 is by far their most expensive car in inventory so I doubt they are looking at your car for them to put on their lot. Maybe he wants to buy it from you? Somewhat odd after seeing that website now.

It ended up it was the dealership's owner was just admiring it and wanted to learn more about it. Apparently nothing nefarious. Seems like a nice guy after all. All's well that ends well.

hello, I'm a Ferrari enthusiast, I'm also looking for Vin Ferrari, but for the sole purpose of creating an updated register of new models (from 2010) I think it's just curiosity. In the past, many journalists and enthusiasts have created registers with Vin Ferraris

Hilarious. You tracked him down by his license plate to find out why he was tracking you down by your VIN. Got to love the information age!

Why don't you contact the FML and ask them....Gerald of course is dead, sine his theft of information...

I've only seen his social behavior, thankfully from a distance..

Maybe google Randy Gori for the dark side of exotic car ownership???
Nothing good comes out of east Austin, man.....

Do you have wooded acreage behind your home???
(Bad inside joke, being stabbed to death in front of your family)...

I'd visit that dealer, let my jacket fall open to reveal a large revolver and tell him "see you again, real soon"....maybe file a Police Report, for when your car ends up missing.

Things are much looser in Texas, you do that here in Massachusetts and you lose your LTC. On the other hand the police here would laugh at you if you wanted to file a report because someone took a photo of your car. I do like the way they do things in Texas. :)
