The next video in the "Stories by Ray" queue happened to be, coincidentally, "What it's like to buy a Ferrari". In addition to perhaps being amusing, this actually might be helpful to the OP, should he ever return to this thread :)

Well I went over there and said "Hey now you listen to me, this is MAGA country!" And I stroked two checks and got this picture I can call my own of a hot new Pista Spider in electric blue with stripes.

Ray, with all due respect, I think you are an awesome dude to hang out with, but I feel that since you were not even given the Pista allocation, I don't know, are you sure your loyalty to then as your friend in the dealership is reciprocated at all?

I have become very jaded with building relationship with car dealerships with my prior experiences. So don't mind my question. not to challenge you at all, just want to be open minded to your perspectives.

You guys in USA have a hard time man . I wandered in to Maranello UK,some 'years' ago, had a good look around then had a cup of tea with a very nice sales chappy .He called me a few weeks later with an invite to a track day with the new 512 TR which i drove to in the 308.

Splendid day with lots of fun ,buffet lunch etc.My plans changed so was unable to go ahead with an order at that time. However they were cool ,no worries.

Not too sure if i would get the same treatment nowadays though. Mind you that F8 is mighty tempting ...decades later.

I was thinking about the same thing last night.... With that said, there have been some interesting drifts in the form of comedy, news and education. So it is worth the time spent. Soon to be 17 pages, stay tuned.

LOL... The return of the prodigy child... The sound of the 458... There isn't a day nor a post that shall go by without the prodigy. I am sure it shows up in the finance section as well... OP reads: I have 1 Mil to invest, any advice? There will be one that replied... But the sound of the 458 @ 9k RPMs can't be beat and that stupid (much better looking and just better overall, best looking Ferrari of all time) F8 sucks

You did not need to specify F8, it could be replaced by any car more recent than the 458 ;)

Just to clarify... I don't want to hurt other people's feelings with my sarcasm. I'm getting an F8... I hope... Soon... I think it may have arrived to NY/NJ. If not, it's coming on the next shipment, which is somewhere between the strait of Gibraltar and NY, scheduled to arrive next Sunday.

If buying a series of Ferraris, forming a close relationship with the salespeople, buying them gifts and still no being offered a Pista, your advice might be taken with a pinch of salt.

I bet you'd have paid handsomely to have that tracker activated before it left Maranello

Salesman could have got more than a bottle of wine :p

It may be - but not for all.

My father was a New Car dealer (US Brand) and their were a large number of people who came into our lives in an extended way that was more like family.

And when the ZR1 came, there were limited spots and clear rules as to allocation.

I did a heart transplant for one of the (Ferrari) dealers staff. No pista.

    812 GTS. But no pista.

What Rob Lay said way back on page 1 rings true. A few people who have made a lot of money, recently (I am not saying the OP brother is one but), like to walk into a Ferrari dealer and get ignored and boast to their friends, well THEY sure didn’t know how much business they were losing by ignoring ME.

Or they do it at Hermes, or the Patek store, or get rejected from the yacht club, or whatever. They want their instant wealth to provide instant access and if it doesn’t they like to use that to boost themselves. And the dealer has 785 other people to buy that car, so they are not really bothered.

On the other hand if he’d gone in there and said I want to buy your stock of trade in Lussos..

I definitely hear ya. I was a little surprised as well frankly. I was invited to the "invite only" debut of the Pista here at Laguna Seca. It was framed to me as a low key, for select clients sort of unveiling. It was in a private room off the race track. So that was sort of interesting. I think the most interesting thing about it, for me, was the collection of odd balls in the room. You had old / out of shape people there with their little dogs in their hands, drooling over the Pista.. talking about "oh, I can't wait to get one of these - look at this, what is that called? Isn't that carbon fiber right?". Clearly the people in the room were selected because I guess Ferrari thought they were the target audience of potential Pista buyers. However, at least 1/4 of them probably didn't know which end of the car the motor was at.

So that was a little odd for me. I had expected the room to be full of die hard Ferrari enthusiasts and/or gear heads or maybe people who were heavily involved in the Ferrari challenge stuff. Instead, it looked like ripe advertising ground for Planet Fitness perhaps. I mean I don't want to sound too snobbish here, but few if any of the people standing around the Pista were gonna be smoking the tires or driving in anything outside of Auto mode - assuming they drove the car at all. I just got the feeling that 95% of the people in the room were there to flip the car or park it in their living rooms and tell their friends "Oooh, I got the new Pista"

So that left sort of a bad taste in my mouth. Then I approached my buddy, who has been a good friend over the years, at dinner about getting a Pista. This was before I bought my 488 GTB. So I told him I was game to get a Pista, drive it for a year and then bring it back to the dealership and let them sell it down the river for me (at a profit, hopefully). This was all back right when the Pista came out. So I figured win/win for both of us. Man, he shut me down so fast, I was sort of taken back. You'd think I had just asked Elon to fly one of his rockets solo or something. So yeah, I mean I get where you are coming from ILoveGT - there is certainly an element of "if we are such pals, why didn't you go to bat for me". To me, it wasn't a big deal either way. I was only sort of half in on buying the Pista.

A while later, I decided to sell the 458 and get the 488 GTB. I figured that would let me see if buying a Pista would be worth while or maybe I should consider getting a Speciale or 812. The 488 was a bust - and my negative experience with the 488 GTB caused me to lose any lingering interest I had as far as getting the Pista.

I do think the Pista is a beautiful car. And I'm sure with the right exhaust, it probably could be made to sound really nice. But at this stage of the game, I have a new company to start and I'm moving down south. So even if I were to get a Pista allocation or something suddenly, I just don't have time. My goal is to get a V12 or an F40 down the road. But probably at least 3-5 years down the road.

Just to summarize, even without getting the Pista, my friend and I get along great. Our friendship is based more on just hanging out and talking about how to cook steaks than which Ferrari to buy next haha.

If it makes you feel any better, I raked the GM and the dealership over the coals pretty hard when I sold the 488 GTB. So hard in fact, I doubt they will ever want to deal with me again haha :)

So it kinda goes both ways.

OP still hasn’t responded. I think he is researching the difference in sound between the F8 and 458.

Hmmmm funny I’ve never been treated by Boardwalk one single time like that...even before I owned any Ferrari’s. Always treated with respect and courtesy even during the broke years....

Also i find any dealership that treats their customers like the OP stated should go broke ...period.

If you don’t like big egos go sell Honda’s......give me a break.

I will say this, I can't argue with your logic there. Based on my past performance, I'm definitely not the guy you should consult as far as getting a Pista allocation haha :-D

But I do think my overall advice holds water as far as how to approach buying a Ferrari in general terms.
