Good afternoon, changing my timing belts at 4yr (~3k mi). 8 years ago I pulled the engine to address a timing case bearing failure (among other things). Both inner and outer bearings were replaced at the time. David Feinberg rebuilt my timing case with new bearings and seals. He did a spectacular job! This area on the timing case was dry at the last belt change (bearings were rock solid too), so the leak is new within the last 4 years. When I saw this leak today, I thought “Awww s#*t”, and fully expected to feel a loose bearing when I removed the timing belt. However, NOT the case. The drive pulley is still as ROCK solid as it was when installed 8 years ago. Zero movement when pushed/pulled. Not even a bearing *chink*. The leak has not fouled the belts (or even the alternator for that matter), couldn’t even be seen until the cam belt cover was removed, and I’m inclined to leave well enough alone and just keep an eye on it. I realize any seal can eventually leak, and I’m afraid trying to cure this can introduce other implications (my cam covers and seals are still dry and I’d love for that to continue for now I’m curious to hear from anyone that has been in this spot, and what you would have done differently-if anything. thanks so much! You’ve clearly never owned a British car, that’s not even a leak! If there’s no oil on the belt I wouldn’t lose sleep over it as it will mark its territory long before anything serious happens.
I think I classify this as seepage more than a leak. It may or may not ever develop further. I vote to leave it alone and monitor the situation to see if it changes. Then take action if needed.
Thx guys! Minor is my impression too. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t “whistling through the graveyard”. Appreciate your taking the time to opine..... I’m probably still just emotionally scarred from the last bearing failure thx again
When mine was leaking I had a indication straight down. Interesting that yours goes forward. Are you sure that bearing is leaking? Can you see behind the plastic shield to verify for sure?
Good eye on the forward motion of the leak....I did verify with a dental mirror that it originates at the bearing. I’m guessing that it is slung off the shaft, or windage of the pulley direction? Confuses me too that it “leaks” forward....
Pretty sure. When I had a REAL leak there it even did flood the alternator. BTW. That's nothing, what I would care about for one minute. Monitor that spot regularly and enjoy your car. First rule with vintage cars. If it doesn't drip onto the floor, there's nothing to worry about. Had my bearings and seals replaced 22 years ago. Looks worse than yours but still not wet. I assume it has been driven a lot. Garage queen leaks look different and don't collect dirt. Best from Germany Martin
Appreciate all the replies guys- thx! I’ve put about 15k KMS since the rebuild (euro odo in kms). It’s been completely trouble free
