Drivers are empoyee's not owners and do not set salary range. Thats done by management. Other sport series have caps. Data easily found on web. If they dont like the number offered they can drive in other places. If the drivers do not want to drive they do not have to. This is really a silly point to debate. There will be no shortage of talent looking to make millions of euro/dollar/ pounds even with a cap.
This isn't a silly point to debate since it affects so many people, present and potential F1drivers, and sets a bad prededent in motor racing. A team should be allowed to pay what it wants, like it should be able to spend as much as it wants. That's the basis of free enterprise. The FIA is interfering too much in teams' finances, IMO.
The teams will control costs. Driver pay is a cost. I have zero problems with this. Drivers are employee's. They are not forced to drive.
You may have zero problem with it, but many won't share your views. I would agree for a minimum wage, but never a salary cap; an employer should be allowed to pay as much as he wants if he thinks a driver deserves it. This issue was already discussed in the 80s, and rejected following a drivers' strike. I hope they do the same this time again. Liberty thinks too much that F1 is like another ball game,
With a cost cap, salary of all is in question. Normal business. They can strike and be replaced. More talent than seats.
I cannot understand you. What is your personnal interest in a salary cap in F1 ? Are you jealous of some drivers' salary? If a team cannot pay much, it doesn't have to. But a top team should be allowed to attract a driver from another team but offering more. That's common practice in business, in management, in finance, etc ... Why F1 should be different ? You assume too much. I have no problem with a driver salary cap if passed. Thats a F1 decision to take. Thats a driver problem not mine. I have no issues with them being paid more or less. If the series elects a cap should I cry? NO. They will be making more than most to begin with. If teams cap salary drivers have options to strike, leave or drive.
If they capped all drivers at £5m per year there would still be a very long queue at F1's door. In an age where key workers are being put at extreme high risk and paid peanuts this is a responsible gesture by F1. F1 is responding to social change.
Wrong comparison. It's market forces at work: People queue up to get "key workers" jobs, but champions are difficult to find. If tomorrow the NHS offers 1000 nurses and 100 doctors jobs, they would be filled in a matter of days. How long it takes to find a potential point scorer in F1? a GP winner? or a World champion? If a team spends $ millions to build the best car, it must be able to attract a driver to join them, or stop him to leave. But it won't be able to do that if it cannot offer above a certain sum? Maybe the driver they aim for is already earning that ! Also, F1 drivers are not stritcly "employees", they are contractors. They have set up companies, if only for tax purpose. LIke the team budget cap, this salary cap is a daft idea. It will be difficult to control, and will lead to more cheating, IMO.
If there is a limit to what a team can pay a driver,... should there also be a limit on what a driver can pay to gain a seat at a team?
I think a salary cap is stupid, too. It is even stupider if the cap includes money paid by sponsors to driver that does not go through the team.
I think that team budget cap and salary cap are pushed by Liberty which want to make F1 less expensive for teams. Liberty may be losing money and wants to distribute less to the teams, so making F1 "cheaper" would help them.

Google says it took them 0.003 seconds to find 10,000 ! {but I digress.....} Russel is reputed to be a near-top-tier driver and is yet to score a point in 3 years. A handful of weeks ago, no-one would believe that Gasly would ever win a race (excepting Gasly himself). A world champion is generally visible even in his first year of F1, if by nothing else, significantly out driving the car at hand faster than the other more experienced team driver. {see Max versus Rici. However Max needs a better engine in the RB or to be driving a different car.}
I don't know where you got those figures, but I think you are confusing earnings (with endorsements) and salary. Salary of all those are in the range of top F1 drivers (around 30 million). A budget cap without a salary cap does not make sense. Either you cap both or you cap none. And a budget cap is definitely needed to increase competitiveness (or reduce dominance if you will). F1 is supposed to be the best of the best. Surely no racing driver will say no to a Mercedes-seat and a guaranteed WDC, only because they earn 25 million instead of 45 ?
Football is the world's biggest sport. The other sports are big in the US. F1 is pretty small in the US.
As the teams already have a budget cap, I don't see a point. It's their problem if they want to waste their limited resources in a driver, a trained monkey or whatever. Having said that, if I owned a top team I wouldn't spend the silly money some drivers are asking for. The budget limit already is going to put a lot of pressure on the rest of the team. And the only team that should be concerned about this is Mercedes: the rest are below the cap. Actually, the only one who should be concerned is Hamilton: he probably is getting a big salary cut.
My point exact! Limiting pay is not an idea unseen before. Outside of that pay, driver can make more money in his world of endorsements
