So explain to me what happened to Stroll. For 3/4 of the race he's in first place with Perez 2nd. He pits and then he ends up 9th while Perez end up second.

Perez along with Lewis, Kvyat, Ocon did 45+ laps on old inters as the track evolved.

Stroll pitted on lap 35(??) along with other drivers for new inters. Stroll failed on tire management while others capitalized on it given track evolution.

I was very happy for him yesterday, but his radio after the race was...

    He's very easy to dislike.

I don't blame Lance. His team decided on 2 pit stops, and he never managed to catch up the time lost in the pits.
It look like wrong strategy from RP.

I think Latifi is giving him a big run for his money on that title.

Imagine if Claire had a F1 aged son who was tolerably good as a race driver. Who do you think would have been in that team's car?

He could not get his tires fired up after stop.

True. They share similar paths. Both started in Williams. Both pay drivers who didn’t deserve their seats.

Lance Stroll proved yesterday and today that he deserved his seat.
He posted a pole in atrocious weather yesterday, took an excellent start and led for 3/4 of the race.
After his stop, he couldn't get to heat his tyres, and slid down the order, to finish 9th.
Bad result, no doubt, but he has nothing to be ashamed of and he certainly didn't disgrace himself.
Not many did better than Stroll during this weekend.

I’m finding it very difficult to imagine how the VET/STR pairing will pan out next year.

When we see the awful performance of VET most of this year you start to think that a decently performing STR will actually beat the 4x WDC. And when you see some of the antics of STR, you think oh yeah, a VET from 2 years ago with maybe a car he’s more comfortable with will beat STR every time.

All I know is that as a Ferrari fan, I’m really looking forward to the expected great performances from next year’s LEC/SAI driver lineup!

He didn’t lead for 3/4 of the race. He led for 60%.

He finished in P9 having started on pole. His teammate started in P4 and finished P2.

He has scored 59 points this season. Perez has scored 100 points.

In the last 6 races he has scored 2 points to Perez 66.

The numbers don’t lie. He’s utter garbage.

Stroll drove very well today. The changeable conditions were always going to make this a lottery race where the strategists and drivers each play a huge part with revisionist history always ending up the winner.

Stroll got pole in fine fashion and equally led a good part of the race showing real skill. Strategy and tire management did not go his way making for a disappointing result. Either way he showed his level and it is quite good.

Certainly not on a Charles or Max level then again he did not chuck his car off the way they did today.

I am not a Stroll fan,... nor a hater. If I were a team investor I wouldn't want him in the seat...

Now with that said,... IIRC Stroll didn't have a single spin or off track excursion in the entire race. That's pretty amazing in those conditions.

Is he deserving of the seat? Depends how you look at it... the seat might not exist if not for his father...

To me it's quite easy to understand what happened. RP pulled Stroll in as a reaction to Ferrari pitting Vettel, who in turn pitted Vettel in reaction to Leclerc. Both turned on their new tyres immediately. RP saw their race disappear so had to pit Stroll.

Stroll was quite happy on the worn tyres, had proper heat in them etc etc. The new tyres didn't have the heat, completely different characteristics than the worn near slick tyre....he didn't have confidence with the new tyre, couldn't push it, lost temperature, even less confidence, finishes P9.

I understand why RP pitted him.

The fact is that Lance Stroll is proving his detractors wrong.
He has stopped being a back-marker, then he started scoring points and even had podiums. Imagine their surprise when he got pole yesterday!
Today he led the race for 60% (thanks for the correction subirg) in very difficult conditions.
He only fell backwards because he couldn't manage his last set of tyres.
If he doesn't deserve to be in F1, as it has been said, then half of the grid is in the same situation.

Maldonado was quick but (very) inconsistent and of course very crash prone.

Stroll did a good job in bad conditions. Shame for him he couldn't get his tyres to work...really not easy to get heat in them once lost. I'm far from a fan of his but he showed this weekend he's growing as a driver.

Still wouldn't hire him from a talent perspective, however.

Had Stroll won today, it would have been a monumental upset for F1.

I remember when Maldonado won his GP !!

Lance did a great job this weekend, the pit wall made the wrong call just like when they cost Perez a podium by calling him in for tires a couple of races ago. Lance wanted to stay out front in 1st place, the pit wall over ruled him and put him on new inters when the old partially slick tires were better as proved by both Perez and Hamilton.
