Hamilton has a 99.9999999999999999999% survival rate. I don't think he's too worried. Besides he gets paid for doing nothing.

It's part of the Concorde Agreement that they need to contest all the races, there is a massive fine involved for skipping. FIA has allowed new teams to skip without fines in the past so I guess it depends on the circumstances.

Paddock rumours are all saying Russell is currently the top runner for the drive with Vando being a driver swap. They will be announcing the driver in the next few hours.

makes the most sense, really want to see what Russell is able to do in a competitive car. I rate him above Bottas

If he managed that, Bottas would probably be joining the Reserve driver program next year LOL

Because F1 isn't NASCRAP Cup racing......

Seriously, aren't teams required by the regs to run two cars? 'Used to be so; I haven't read them in years tho'.......

edit:'Sorry SPEEDCORE, I hadn't gotten to your post yet. Thanks for the confirmation.

I wouldn’t be surprised that mercedes chose vandoorne to protect their marketing investment with Hamilton.
If Russell dominates Bottas then everything would be questionable regarding Lewis.

The FIA hasn't cancelled the rest of the season.

    The fans did.

The hypothesis of a manoeuvre to get Russel some more experience with the car/team and hit the ground running next year when Hamilton has already decided he won’t be racing, starts to seem almost believable

Well, Merc manned up and got Russell in, just like most fans wanted.

Apart from this, at least Merc has really let their drivers race with each other. Caring about their image to the point that the racing becomes a distant second sounds more like something the Scuderia would do. :D

Glad for Russell. Sad for van Strudel.

And I'm worried for Crofty having a heart-attack while commenting on Russell. He'll be yapping like there is no tomorrow.

Awesome Merc is running with George! However...what are your thoughts on Merc giving Russell the perfectly tune car to run up front...or will they try and keep him mid upper pack so that the Hamliton isn't shown up? Thought?

They will give him the best car they have. He won't be showing up Hamilton. He is nowhere near the champ's mastery of F1. Why aren't they worried? Just look at what Bottas manages with the same car. Not really a threat either.

The bigger question is more whether they will be using any of the 2021 developments on the car or not. Probably not as Russell will go back to Williams. If there is any development work, I bet it will be on Bottas' car.

I just hope Russell will use the car wisely and score some points, so he doesn't end up with zero. The worst he could do is another Imola in the grid's best car.

    Totally agree.
I think folk could be forgiven for placing pressure on GR's shoulders, just due to the fact they want him to prove anyone can run a Merc to a win.

However I really hope he will do well , the only downside I see for LH is, it may hurt his cause in renegotiating his salary, IF GR does exceptionally well.
