Now on to the latest release: the legendary 1985 Peugeot 205 turbo 16 EVO 2
Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
which was introduced in August 1985 at the "Rally of 1000 lakes" in Finland which it won with this year's world champion Timo Salonen at the wheel: a very nice model - again with perfect proportions and fine details (possibly lacking some finesse in the engine compartment which has been critizised in an Italian modelcar blog) - I cannot comment on this before consulting my rally book library, but I don't see this as a big problem because the whole car looks great (the only available plastic kit for the EV 2 has been Heller's simplified - less than average - kit; Tamiya made the original version, not the EVO 2) - on to the pics!

Looks very good. The A110 is also the later version with bigger flares than the Tamiya kit. Hachette does better bodies than most of the 1/24 plastic kit makers it has to be said. I have these on the way also from ebay. Expensive but so are the Japanese 1/24th kits now. And if you ever need good quality decals for a reasonable cost UMI's Mike Quarterman and several others do superb work, and they know most of the cars so no baby sitting them.

Hi Tom, does Mike still run his own business or is he a consulter for studio 27? I see on several Studio 27 the writing "design by UMi".
30 years ago, when he started his MRRN mag (I have every issue and made a small contribution about the 250 Breadvan in one of the very first) - there were always advertisements for UMI Modellwerke from which I bought a few transkits and decals.
But when MRRN was ended, I thought that he turned UMi down also.

He's still around. He did my Pan Am Cartograf decals including the VW Pan Am decal that was delayed but will be available early 2021 in 1/24th only. He has been also doing several special projects just for me. Indy Decals does the printing on the limited stuff. They are very good quality decals that have to be cut out.

Finally, here are the long-promised comparison pics between hachette's Le Mans test 1972 Matra 670 and its high-priced brother from Spark/Le Mans miniatures: you get what you pay for, whereas the Hachette model lacks in some details, it is a very nice car in its own: When you put the two side by side, you will notice that the Hachette version has a lighter shade of blue and a slightly different rear wing which is also missing its rivets.
The airbox is split in half, its mountings are not detailed and the decals on the front fender louvers are not cut in pieces like they were on the original car - otherwise the decals look pretty good, only the tire lettering is not period correct for 1972, but a bit too large.
The cockpit rivets are just silver dots of paint and the safety harness is a simple decal, whereas the Spark model shows photoetched hardware and fabric seat belts; there is always room for improvement, if you wish!
Surprisingly, the hachette model has the nicer front lights, the other has a better detailed rear end (gearbox, frame, battery etc.). But for its price you can hardly complain - on to the pics !

When you look at the 1969 Ford GT40, the 1972 Matra 670 and the 1978 Renault-Alpine A442B pictured here, we can only hope that from this test a new series will emerge with some other great models that have not yet been available at all or only as high-priced limited resin kits....

Back to the (Italian) WRC Collection: the above list could indeed show # 30 to 39, because # 27 (Toyota Yaris 2019) has totally disappeared - either deleted or postponed for a later release date - here is an updated list from Hachette (found again on www.automodellando.it)

    My latest contribution:

A little bit late this time as I missed the iconic Ford Escort Mk II 1800 RS which had been quickly sold out at my favourite Italian ebayer, I had to wait 2 weeks more for the second batch (I also missed the Delta S4 – hope to get it soon also!) – here it is: The winning car from the 1979 Akropolis rally (Greece) of Björn Waldegaard, back then the first ever rally world champion !

Though I don’t like the livery – which is a matter of personal taste – I had to have this one (there are lots of different decals out there, and this car came in countless color combinations, with various different sponsors over the years).

The main irritation (we modelers and collectors are certainly used to this) is that all the tobacco decals are missing – so you will have to find a good source for those Rothmans scripts and logos (see original car on the flyer that comes with the model).

On the positive side are the correct proportions of the whole car and the delicate details especially on the front grill/headlights. The weak points – as with all of the WRC collection cars – are decals for the seat belts and totally absence of decals for the instruments. Here the aftermarket comes in – a little detailing will certainly bring up the interior.

Nevertheless – highly recommended for all rally fans.

    Pics will follow shortly!

As you can clearly see, 2 Rothmans logos on the roof, one on the hood are missing as are 4 Rothmans scripts on the front and rear wings as well as 2 small ones on the upper windscreen left and right...

Someone just updated the WRC 1/24th list. Some nice stuff coming. Now if they would only continue the 1/24th Lemans and F1 series!!!! Glad to see a Peugeot 504 V6 coupe. Love that car. Now we need a 1985 TDF Alfa GTV6, although it is a Rothmans car. Also finally a Audi A2 1984.

This is not the A2, but the quattro sport ("der Kurze" = the short one, because the wheelbase had been reduced for 320 mm which is about 12 inches). While this one didn't take any win, it was developed into the ultimate Quattro monster: the S 1

Sorry I forgot that the S2 had the longer wheelbase. I don't really like Audi's but I like the short wheelbase Quattro Sport version. Saw a row of them at the Monterey Historical races 10 years ago and thought they were very cool. I think the club is based up in Minnesota USA for those cars for some reason. I like cars that make nice noises, the Audi's sound like washing machines gone bad other than the Lambo engined cars :)

Her is my latest acquisition: the ultimate development in Group B rallying - the Lancia Delta S 4, equipped with supercharger/compressor AND turbocharger to avoid the turbo lag when accelerating - the real car was a handful and due to missing development time could not beat Peugeot's 205 EVO in the world championship in 1986 - the Lancia was runner-up:
But the model is a REAL winner - for me, it is easily the best one yet in this series: I would rate this one 9 out of 10 points:
very nice markings, crisp details (the mesh between the taillights is a clear tampo-printed plastic part which looks very convincing!) - the measurements are exact the same as in Aoshima/Beemax' kit - on to the pics of the Monte Carlo winning car from 1986 of the late Henri Toivonen who lost his life together with his co-driver Sergio Cresto unfortunately a few months later in a fiery accident during the Corsica rally.

The latest WRC release is the ill-fated MG Metro 6R4 which took 3rd place in the British 1985 RAC rally driven by Tony Pond at its first appearance in the World Rally Championship – and at the same time its best result (on home ground).
Originally developed by Williams F1 team as a racecar with a normally aspirated 2,5 ltr. V6 engine, it was transformed into a group B rally car - lots of compromises had to be made and even with the final 3 ltr. V6 engine delivering about 420 hp, it lost more and more ground against its strong competition (Audi, Lancia and Peugeot).
So in late 1985, its best achievement was its only podium at its first outing on the worldchampionship stage.
Though I always found this little car to be very ugly, the model is a real gem and looks very good in this livery - on to the pics!

The latest addition to my steadily growing rally car collection: the very first version of the Audi Quattro: 1981 San Remo rally winner driven to the win by my sentimental favourite: the French superwoman Michèle Mouton. This was the first ever rally world championship event won by a woman and also the very first win of a 4WD rally car on worldchampionship level – rallying would never be the same again.

In 1982 she managed another 3 wins and came very close to winning the driver's championship that she lost to Walter Röhrl - she became vice-champion.
In 1985, she also took the overall win at the Pikes Peak Hillclimb in Colorado, setting a new record time.

While this model might not look as spectacular as the mid-engine group B monsters, it has been done with much finesse (headlights, mud flaps, tow hook, registration stickers etc.) has all the correct decals, is about 2 mm narrower than the Tamiya kit, but looks right to my eyes. The instruments show dials for the first time in this series !
I noticed 3 flaws on this model that do not detract from the positive impression: the most noticeable are the louvers in front of the windshield wipers: there should be 2 sections of them in body color, not 3 sections in black (Tamiya got this correct); the front grille looks like it is protruding a little too far over the front bumper. The “D” sticker on the rear bumper should be oval instead of round (this can be solved within a few seconds with a decal from a Revell of Germany kit), whereas the missing cooling slots in the upper front bumper are correct (they came into being in the following year - as sported on Tamiya's 1982 Akropolis version!) – enough talked: On to the pics !

During a break from rally cars, what about a little variety?
It is the winner of the 24 hrs. race 1967 at the infamous old Fuji raceway...

I won this model 2 years ago on ebay.com for $ 31,34 including shipment from China to Europe.
I think this is a model that only subscriber of the Japanese hachette car series did receive - it is the same car that is available as a plastic kit from Hasegawa.
Doors open, headlights pop up, very fine windshield wipers and very nice livery - wheel spinners are red on the left and blue on the right side - this detail reminded me of the 1967 Le Mans winning Ford Mk IV - anyway, you can't go wrong with a deal like this!

Necessary will be a little dechroming at the rear gas caps, removing the reversing lights, and : voilà !

    Here are the pics...
