    yes, didn't mean to be snarky, but I grew up in Kansas and it use to be the pinnacle of aviation, then has been in steady decline. still major military operations and commercial aviation that will soon be getting into supersonic flight. Wichita the center of many civilian test programs.

    Regarding the OP's original question, I'm not sure of the technical reasons, but I use to commute remote I-70 (Ks.) in the night time hours and (learned to) routinely spot stealth aircraft flying over the interstate (low level) with no identifying lights or sound. I learned it was the development of the bombers (I believe flying out of Missouri). Now I guess there will be a lot of sound.

    There has always been a bunch of low flying military activity. Just my personal experience the bombing range west of Salina (Smokey Hill) and then living west of Topeka there was a low flying corridor. Those experiences cemented my love for aircraft.

    so I lived Alma between there off I-70 1982-1985. it was awesome a south to north low flying corridor that went just east of Alma, but often they would come right over Alma. less than 1,000 feet the B-52's were especially impressive, also remember A-7's and F-4's. Not sure what else. I might be able to find some old old pics.
