Bill- Some of us just do not make a round trip to Vegas fairly often. Mine only has 26,000 miles and seems to get about 1000 miles per year.

@wbklink you likely have a delightful/intimate relationship with your Maranello whereas all those low mile "investment trophies" sit most of the time "unloved"!

I get it cause most of my toys don't get used much either. 8-(

p.s. we need more guys like you with "big miles" to share story updates on maintenance investments over long periods. Doug that recently sold his Blu TdF with something like 66k or 68k on it had obviously enjoyed his car over his 12 year hold and his investment was material/sizable. I want to say his average was maybe close/about $2.00/mile-ish?

@fatbillybob i don't know if I recall reading any thread about mileage on your car? I consider you one of the "professors" here and for some reason I want to say my gut tells me @tazandjan and another professor @Cribbj might have mileage in the same neighborhood? My gut/perceptions is your use might be higher?

What I can’t figure out is why the 550 is taking such a huge lead over the 456 in values. Is having a back seat really so terrible?

There is crazy crazy crazy wealth/money out there buying hard assets, specifically on Bring A trailer. It is driving 550's up (among many others) the 456 has just never been as lusted after. The people that are real enthusiasts are likely driving and enjoying 456's, the rich guys parking cash, creating collections are buying different "categories" than the 456.

The unrealistic continued run up in the market has people putting assets in other areas and things are non-sensical in the commercial real estate market in many areas as well.

Heck even I have bought a "non-normal" amount recently of 1oz gold coins and larger silver coin/bars in the search of diversification.

Lots of cash chasing limited "reasonable" assets.

I enjoy following the development of the market for the 456, 550 and 575. People are always talking about the condition / miles / value thing. It is interesting for sure as this is what people care about when they want to buy and how they look at their own investment when they own the car. I have a bit of a different approach to the whole thing. I see the car as a great value for myself and the marketing of me and my business and my lifestyle. These are «values» that people care more about (who I am) much more than what my car is worth. As time goes by, new cars and inventions in the car world gives new opportunities to car owers and enthusiasts. So even if I love my 550 today, there can come days where other cars can be great too. I sell American powerboats («Cigarette-style boats» in Europe, and if I only sell ONE extra boat because I generate one extra buyer by the fact that I can get new relations within enthusiast community for cars and boats, I have earned back what I have lost in value because I run my car alot. So even if I only get for example 60.000 euro for my car, it is still worth it. Plus the enjoyment I have from it and the fact that it is an ultra reliable car just do the thing for me. When you drive a Maranello, you send signals out to the surrounding world. Signals that I, subjective of course!!, find as good values, and even better than the newer models. Nobody even notice a guy in an ordinary car. Values like passion for engineering, design and style is quite clear when you step out of your 550 Maranello. And the fact that you offer something people are willing to pay enough for that you are able to buy a Ferrari. It is also something that people talk about and makes them share social media posts etc. Free advertizing. Marketing of my business and myself! I am willing to let my car go down in value as long as I increase my own «value» and general income. It is not more expencive to run a 550 that will hold a certain value compared to a more modern car that fall as a rock the first fifteen years! That is something to think about... ;-)

Enzo haven’t forgotten his first trip to Italy when the girls at the gas station on top of a mountain gave him huge Parma ham slices. And when I called on him to come back to the car and his name was Enzo, the girls went bananas. (They saw we had Swedish plates on the car!). We went from Stockholm and he was small enough to lay down comfortably between my buddy’s legs in the passenger footwell. Had a great chase with a 991 GT3 RS in south of Germany and hit 300 one time, and plenty more left. He was about 10 months and the cutest thing in the world!! Was even at the factory in Maranello. And then first off to south of France with the M3, which was already in Italy. I then rented an appartment in Nice and took the bimmer down there to save on the 550 which had brand new paint. French people in Nice city should never had cars! But of course the clutch broke a few days after Christmas and no one could fix the car on a short notice... So we had to leave the M3 in Nice and then took the train to Milano and then to Desenzano at Lago du Garda and pick up the 550 anyway which always work. Then we drove back to France. Of course he arrive in style! :)

Four seat Ferraris have never been as loved on the used market. Even if they drive as well or better. 365 GTC4 arguably drives better than a Daytona, 612 better than a 575 (though it was crossing over to the next gen). I don’t think there’s one single reason why this is so. Maybe because the Ferrari icon is a dude with a fast lady in the front seat, not one with two small children in the back.

I have considered this several times BUT my little girls would destroy the interior and as I’ve gotten older I realize more that my wife and the girls really couldn’t care less for recreational drives or car events. I’m more likely to go solo or ride with one friend thus the redirection away from the 456 (for me personally).

Fair point..I am noticing now though as my kids are at the teenage “taxi please” age that if my 575 or any of my Ferraris had back seats, I would be able to give them + friend a ride to parties and events, which I can’t do.

again, not something many collectors are fussed about I guess.

I've always had a soft spot for the 456 - I think it is a wonderful and under appreciated car, especially in the right color. I think it is the best 4-seater of the modern Ferrari era (though I kinda like the funky FF too).

For me, though, the 550/575M are on a whole different level. I think Pininfarina simply nailed the design - muscular, understated and elegant. I also did a bit of a marketing test with my wife, showing her various 456s and 550/575s - she very clearly gravitated towards the Maranellos.

My kids are a bit older and can drive themselves, so back seats were less of an issue. I also got them used to the idea of a two-seater a few years ago when I bought a 124 Spider Abarth (the 'Fiata') as my summer daily driver.

No bad choices here. We are incredibly fortunate to be able to enjoy these amazing cars.

Personally, I think the 400 is the best Ferrari. It has the real coupe look, quite big rear seats, V12 and has the same simplicity in the design as the Maranello. And no catalyzers means great sound. Areal bargain compared to the two seaters of the 70-ies. I wish I could afford both.
