My ‘97 355 needs both cats replaced. So I’m in search of used or after markets that pass NJ/NY emissions. Can my originals be re-cored?

Thanks to anyone for chiming in.

Fabspeed can recore your originals. Evoflow cats are aftermarket and are reasonably priced. They usually have some on eBay.

Jimmy or anyone — any feedback on this Evoflow cat for any known issues with State Inspection (excl CA) and/or CELs.

If your goal is to pass a state emissions inspection those 200 cell cats wont work. You need a pair of the OEM style certified cats to ensure you have no emissions related codes and the ECU is fully ready when they interrogate it. I ended up buying 49 state approved Pacesetter cats from RockAuto in order to get my 355 through emissions and then I removed them afterwards, put my high flow cats back on with O2 sensor extenders and put the Pacesetters into storage until the required inspection the next year. It was a pain to have to swap them in every year, but it was the only way I could renew my registration tag. Now the car is 25 years old so it is exempt from emissions testing here and I no longer need to do the cat swapping.

It comes down to the wording of your State law. If they require cats, then they usually have wording that specifies that replacement cats must have the DOT certification stamped on the housing.

If your factory cats throw codes and are failing emissions testing, your choices are limited.

    1) buy new cats at $9k each from Ferrari. Ridiculous but certainly meets the law.

    2) recore your existing cats which solves the Visual Inspection but may not pass a formal Emissions Tailpipe Test.

    3) buy aftermarket cats which do not have DOT stamping and roll the dice that they don’t do a Visual Inspection or a formal Emissions Tailpipe Test.

    4) register the car in another Emissions friendly State.

Remember once it flunks.....it is recorded that way in the DMV system which alerts the inspector to do a Visual inspection.

I have the Evoflows on my car, which is a 95. They been on my car since 2013. I haven’t had any issues with them. Reasonably priced and are well made. In MA, my car is now exempt. I purchased a set of Tubi test pipes which I am going to put on in the near future.

I have one nearly brand new cat if that helps you. It’s the metallic core used on the 1999 models. I only have one. I had both cats replaced under warranty, took them off after a few hundred miles and sold the car with test pipes on it. Later, I purchased a 2nd 355 and used one of the brand new ones.

Long story short, I have 1 available if that helps you. Let me know.
